Hiya all, hope you are all dandy.

I have been asked if i would like to do nails in a local hair salon and i would love your help, Its a fantastic salon, i know the owners quite well, its very local and its won loads of awards. They have offered me maximum exposure, but are there any important questions i should be asking them b4 i make up my mind.

They have said i can work a couple of days a week and the rest of the time carry on mobile. I provide my own tools and products, its sgoing to be a commision based thing.

Anything i should be careful or wary of ? or does it sound ok

thanks guys xxx

Hi Angie,

Find out what the commision is? I mean if you have to buy all your own products, you dont want to be having to give them most of your earnings if you know what i mean. Will they advertise you? Will you be tied down to them in case it doesnt work out? Maybe suggest a 3 month trial period and if it doesnt work out you can cut your losses and run after 3 months? A few things to think about.

Hi babe......
Ok questions to ask..........
Will you have a designated area for your nail station?
Can you offer chair side service?
Will you be able to retail your products?
Will all retail be commission free in other words will all profit be yours???
Whats the commission?
Will you be able to expand on the days you are there?
Will they get another Technician in, or will you be the sole Technician there ?
Will you have a contract ?
Can you run offers coinciding with the Salon.......... as in A full Set of enhancements will be able to have xyz% of a Hair service?
Will you be in charge of your own business?
Will you have mutual cancellation of contract period ???
How will they advertise you?
Will it cost you anything?

These are just a few off the top of my head.
This is how I started out and 10 years down the line I am still there......... If you have ground rules and know where you both stand it can work out just fine xxxx

Some things to consider...what if one of THEIR (assuming most of the clientele you get will be theirs) clients have a problem or break on one of the 5 days you're not around? What if one of their clients don't like their nails for whatever reason and make a complaint, what is their usual procedure for hair clients, will this affect you? Assuming they will be making appointments for you, have you made them aware of the time required? You will have to do some education of the staff making bookings, you don't want to end up with someone booking in for a set of nails only to find they already have something on that needs soaking off before you start, or possibly someone books to 'have their nails done' how do the staff interpret this? they need to know all the right questions (this is only an example of what MIGHT go wrong when other people are doing your appts). Are you going to be available at the other end of the phone so that you can answer their questions for the first while until they become competent?

What if you don't get appointments but they expect you to be around all day just in case one of their clients wants a quick file and polish? Will this still be financially viable for you?

Knowing hairdressers I would expect they will want you fri/sat and poss late thur, will you still be able to do your own mobile on the other days and make it financially viable?

Not meant to be a negative post in any way, forewarned is forearmed, this kind of deal could work out very well for you AND be very lucrative...be prepared to end up working 6 days a week and earning lots of dosh BUT be aware of the pitfalls in the beginning so you can be well prepared for any issues that may come up. Good Luck, Fiona

Hiya Fiona,

Thank you sooo much for your reply, its gave me alot to think about and some very useful points, you are so right about booking appointments and asking the customers very important questions such as "do you have any kind of enhancements on at the moment" etc... I have told the owners that I would be continuing with being mobile on the day i am not at the salon, and they said that was fine just to remember that if they ever need a good hairstylist to give them their card, hahaha so i suppose it could be good for all of us. I have asked about nail repairs out of hours and they are more than happy for me to do these whenever is best for client, so again they are very flexible.
The only thing we havent sorted yet is how much commision they are going to want, or how much i am prepared to hand over. I read on here somewhere that a girl was handing over 40% and alot of replys saying that it was alot, i really dont have any idea on what is the norm.....any help???

They did say they would cover all my advertising and as he is a accountant he would do my books and things if i wanted him to. A part of me thinks sod it jump in have a go and dont look back, but then apart of me thinks no stay mobile and earn and keep ya own money.
Thanks again for your feedback it was VERY much appreciated. xxx

hi

i know you have had a lot of advice but instead of working on a percentage of what you make depending on your clientele it may be worth paying a standard rate for rental. I would also consider giving a 3/6 month trial basis to see how things go before setting in stone. and no matter how well you know the manager business is business set things in writing.
