Hi lovely ladies i really want to train in ladies haircutting but cant afford to give up my ft job. Private courses are very expensive. I've seen an ad for a cobra hair academy that teach u ladies hair cutting in 5 days.. Is that possible? Also i notice the colouring hair course isanother week of training at a further cost. My questions are us this course reputable ie will i get insurance? Also would i need to do the colouring course as well if i want to colour hair? Can i do the haircutting course and do a cheaper coursr in hair colouring?

Ps im in scotland and the long term plan is to work mobile or have my own salon.

I would really appreciate any help

Hi, personally i dont think its possible to learn even 1 hair cut to the right standard in 5 days...colleges usually offer night courses which may even be cheaper that the course you have seen, and will be over a longer period of time in which u will gain more experience :) the college in my area offers the fast track level 2 / 3 hairdressing part time which is 1 or 2 nights a week for so long....maybe that would be better although i have not done it my self :)

5 days wow! I did the standard apprenticeship when I trained many moons ago. We spent the first 2 months learning how to shampoo properly, never mind haircuts. I remember the guy that trained me made me sit whenever I had a spare moment with my scissors practicing the movements of the blades on the back of my hand to "get the balance and control right". It was another two months before I was allowed to actually do a haircut on a model night.

There is a lot of sense in this. When you are shampooing you get the sense of different types hair texture and differing movements of the hairline, crown and shapes of the head. By the time you have done that for a while sectioning makes sense and hair that twists the wrong way doesn't come as so much of a surprise.

To be honest I am somewhat offended by such claims and I am equally offended by people that think they can master something so quickly.

As for cost. How much would you spend on a weeks holiday? How much do we spend on other stuff? But we don't want to invest in our careers. I know I keep banging on about this but its true. A few quid at the beginning will be the difference of many 10s of thousands of earning in later years. I believe the average student starts work with £30k in debt to be paid back once they start earning and even then they quite often don't have a clue what they want to do. What's wrong with doing the same for training hairdressing? Done well it is an excellent way to earn a VERY good salary. It is a skill, and not one learnt easily or quickly. People who do hair for a living after such short training times is giving our profession a very bad reputation in my opinion.

If you are going to insist on going down this route please don't let your clients know how you trained. But then again they will soon know and you will have a devil of a job keeping them.

Sorry to rant. Its just that I trained for almost 4 years and even now after over 20 years I am still learning stuff.

I have to say I agree with everyone else.

The best thing might be to go to your local college and do a evening course and maybe try to do work experience in a salon on a day off. Then after you have qualified do other advanced cutting courses.

As for colour, IMHO I think this is one of the hardest to master and I'm still learning after being in the industry for 6 years.

It's not as simple as just putting on a colour. And what if they want colour correction?? Or want lifting from a base 4 to bleach hair?

I know I would find it hard if I only had a few days in which to learn it

I don't know much about the cobra course but how honestly can they teach you colour and cutting within two weeks when its taken me over 20 years to master and still I'm learning after all this time. The thing with hairdressing is you never stop learning what with all the new styles that come in to the fashion. So what about the health and safety like checking your filter on a hairdryer and sterilising tools. Go on a part time evening course at college if your asking me. Take your time and learn the skill, accuracy takes time and if you take your time then hairdressing skills become more accurate.

Very valid points ladies. Your all right in that its a skill that takes years to master and to think otherwise would be an insult to the amazing hairdressers out there.

You all make sense and I guess i will do the sensible thing and enrol on a evening course as soon as time permits.

it just seemed to be true!!

right of to the local colleges websites to see what they offer!!!

to all the great hairdressers out there keep up the good and to the crap one i experienced yesterday God help you!!

thanks lovelies

Good luck to our future geek x

If you need to work FT maybe an evening course??? But then you will not gain any salon experience and many employers will not take on people with no salon experience....sorry to sound doom and gloom....Maybe if you have 1 spare day a week you could try and get some work experience then...good luck!!

Although I have done the edit so as not to slander anyone...I stand by the 'trying to learn all hairdressing skills in 5 days is impossible '...BUT this is just 'My Opinion' only and as far as im aware in this country I am allowed to have an opinion.
If anyone knows of a law where im not allowed an opinion then please advise and i will edit according!!

I agree with Pip there. it is not realistic to train and continue to do your full time job. At some point you've got to take the hit and leave the full time job if you want to pursue a new career. As the old saying goes "no pain, no gain".

Good luck.

Hands up who were pm'd by Cobra hair???

I had one once too for saying the same opinion.

A friend of mine did a training course through corbra academy and a few weeks later she is now got her own top end salon ! She can not praise cobra enough.

I dont understand peoples problems , 5 days to learn something is intense , you only really learn once you are out there gaining experience.

Its like driving lessons , once you pass your test , you only really learn is once your dont have your driving instructor at side of you , you are on your own , gaining the experince and confidence. This is only the same.

People might not agree with me , but this is my opinion , im telling you what my friend did and were she is now , and this is thanks to cobra academy.

We will NOT have our members receiving PM's of a threatening manner by ANYONE!

If you have received a PM of this nature then please report it to the moderators - there is a red box in every PM for reporting.

Equally if anyone feels their business is being harmed by posts on Salon Geek then they should equally report it to the moderators and we will investigate and deal with it.

We are not in the business of censoring our members unless they are breaking the law or the site rules.

If a business owner states that they would not employ a person who has only done a short course then that is fact and in no way should they be underhandedly threatened on our site for stating this.

Anyone found to be acting in this way will be immediately banned!

There are no short cuts pardon the pun haha. Seriously, it depends how serious you are about it as a career, there's a lot more to it than cutting and colouring, I had no other option but to go to evening college for 2 years part time to learn the basics, and believe me, in 2 years you really do only learn the basics, if you're serious then look for a part time college course? 5 days to learn how to cut?? whoever tells you this is possible, don't believe them, they're having you off big time!:)

I have no idea how long it takes to learn all aspects of hairdressing but what I do know from experience is that some hairdressers are absolute crap even after spending years at college, and some (like my former hairdresser who was a brilliantly talented stylist) have no people skills at all. I stopped going to her as she was rude and patronising and as talented a she was totally unprofessional. Does '*** ash' really remove tint stains??? I think if you have the passion, dedication and ability to learn something then you will learn it wether it be 5 days or 5 years. As with anything practice is the key word.

Erm, yes, *** ash really does remove tint stains!!!!

I think all the real hairdressers are pretty much in agreement that it takes longer than 5 days.

I thought I knew it all during my training, but as the years have gone on, I have realised that nobody can truly know everything about such a vast subject.

To claim otherwise after 5 days, or even 5 years for that matter, shows a lack of understanding of the true complexities of our subject.

Just my opinion, no nasty PM's please. Yes, I'm talking to YOU, and you know who you are.
