Hi all. Interested in people's views on in salon cleaning, I own a salon & have 2 chair renters. There is myself and 1 of the girls who clean, order refreshments when needed, basically have the foresight to order things that the "salon" needs.

We are in agreement that even though we are 3 separate businesses that we should all be working together as a team, greeting each other's clients, helping each other out & generally keeping the salon clean and tidy as we all have clients coming in. The other girl is somewhat lazy, does the bare minimum. Sometimes has 1 or 2 clients in and the next day you come in and there's hair everywhere, tea & coffee stains on the dresser, no peroxide as she's used the last and not re ordered etc. it's now come to the point where us 2 are fed up of babysitting a 27 year old woman.

Any suggestion show to handle this situation, how do other salon owners deal with the cleaning with self employed staff? Thanks

I do all the cleaning in my salon - it is my responsibility, and then I know it's done. However, I do expect a degree of tidiness from everyone.

Is she using your products? I would go mad if she used the last of something without telling anyone or re-ordering. This is ridiculous! As you say, she is a grown up.
I think it needs to be salon policy that your work area is tidy before you leave - tea wiped up, hair swept.

Hmm. Tricky one.

I was a chair renter and when I was quiet I would clean. It did annoy me that the other chair renter never mopped or polished at the end of the day. On the odd occasion she did 'deep clean'. But I felt this was few and far between.
The salon owner did all the ordering and regularly checked we were low.

As a salon owner now I agree with Vic. The chair renters should do general tidying and cleaning.
I think it should be up to the salon owner to reorder and replenish. Maybe get the chair renters to write when something's only half full? Then you know to get new ones?
