My therapist told me that it normal to have a bit of pain esp during cuticle work while having a mani done.
I don't have much experience but used to occasionally go to the discount salons and know that they sometimes can cause a bleed.
I was told that everyone who gets their nail done regularly simply expect a bit of pain. I also had a bleed- again I know this can happen. I've now had 4-5 nail sessions and really don't look forward to it.
My question is- is this expected or not? Am I being a wimp?

You shouldn't be in any pain at all. A bleed is caused if the living tissue (which should never be touched) is nipped etc during a mani / pedi, but no, you shouldn't experience pain. A mani/ pedi is a luxury is something to look forward too. I would look into give another tech in your area.

I'm sorry but bleeding and pain is not a normal thing. I've never made someone bleed when I've done their hands and the only time I did on toes is when this sweet older man came in with toes so gnarly I couldn't tell the difference between toenail and dirt. And even then, it was on one toe and a tiny nick.

If they are making you bleed every time you get your nails done, they are doing it wrong. Once in a blue moon as an accident, yes. Every time? Hell no.

So no, you are not a wimp. They are wrong, very, very wrong.

Only time I made anyone bleed was when I first started training in enhancements and nicked my friend with a brand new white block (the edges are quite sharp at first). As has been said there should be no pain, no blood. Hope you find a tech who is a bit kinder to your hands x

Maybe it's normal that her clients suffer pain from a manicure if she's regularly cutting living tissue/skin but this is absolutely not normal with a manicure - this is one treatment where pain is definitely not gain - just a route to infection :-/ xx

No it shouldn't hurt. the tech probably isn't soaking the feet long enough or leaving cuticle remover on for long enough. If you do this then the cuticle should push back easily without pain. Then when nipping it should be easier to see what is dead cuticle and what is the nail fold.
Some places try to remove all the cuticle. This is unnecessary and can lead to infection. Only excess dead skin should be nipped.

Are you going to someone who is very rough? Some therapists are butchers I have seen horrible horrible jobs done recently and they try save time not soak hands and push cuticles quickly and at wrong angle which can also cause pain.

If however you have very thickened and bad cuticles (ex nail biter) eg this can be more difficult and also time consuming. But they shouldn't be cutting LIVE tissue only removing the excess cuticle on the nail plate so no blood..
Perhaps change salons ..

Oh nail biters! When I try and do my bf's nails it's a nightmare. His thick excess cuticle grows halfway up his nail! He also moans if it's even slightly uncomfortable (not painful!). I think he just likes to wind me up though 😝

You should definitely NOT feel any pain whatsoever. And as for bleeding, wtf!
If my students cause any blood during their exams its an instant fail. What did they do with the tool they used that caused you to bleed? If it was not a metal tool, it should have been placed in a clinical waste bin. If it was metal, it should have been removed from the treatment area straight away to be sterilised in an autoclave.

Gosh thats shocking!
