I had a client come in with what i suspect are NSS nails.
I originally planned on overlaying/filling so that over time, her acrylics would grow out (this also saves me the time of having to remove whatever the previous tech put on) but the lifting was so bad that the free edge of her actual nail wasnt even attached to the acrylics anymore, so I ended up filing everything off which took forever.....
client then said,
"The lady would just go under the nail to file off my actual nail with the drill thing" (I suppose this is so the tech wouldn't have to fix the lifting)

?!?!? IS THIS A THING?!?? that can't be right

Yes, its happened to nearly all if my clients who have been to NSS previously. They offer no after care advice such as regular oiling to prevent the natural nail from drying out so free edge separation is a common issue and is always resolved by drilling off the natural nail from underneath

Yes I've come across this regularly, awful isn't it

AND I've even had a few ladies ask if I can do it as well because they didn't like the look of their own manky yellowy nail growing underneath

A couple even went back despite the promise of better nails with me, because I use hand files and they liked their nail being drilled off (weird) actually didn't care about their own nails one jot

everytime a client tells me about their nss experience I just cant help but cringe..

this is a little off topic but is there any way you ladies tell MMA from EMA acrylics when your client comes in? do they smell different when you're filing? I'm still quite new to nails

You'll know! They smell fishy, literally like old fish, as you file them, plus you'll be filing and filing but nothing will happen, they are too hard to file by hand hence their need for efiles/drills.

I don't think you should completely put down this method (filing natural nail at free edge under extension) - here is why... I have this one client, who's natural nails have been pain in the *** for me to work with, to say the least... Originally she started coming to me to have manicure with gel polish (previously only used nail services from time to time, with bad luck), well... no matter what I did, gel polish would chip or peel away withing few days.. I was totally beaten down! Then I suggested her trying out hard gel extensions, she agreed and so we did.. So, I sculpted real nice set for her on forms. She was so happy and when she came in for infill there was no lifting, everthing was in tip-top shape. After 1st infill - still everything fine... Then after 2nd infill, once her natural nail reached the full lenght of free edge, problems started to occure - there was terrible lifting at free edges, nails started to pop off within days. So I tryed different brands, different techniques - nothing seemed to help. So I filled all the enhancments off, and sculted them from zero - and voi-la! everything was fine once again. So I figured, problem must be, that her natural nail, once at free edge, just starts to separate from gel. Having to remove the gel completelty every 2-3 appointments to scultp it all from begining is just so time consuming and not good for nail plate/bed.. So I figured I will try to file natural nail at the free edge under extension, so I did... And it works!
I only use this method with this client, as with others I don't have such problems.

the sad thing is, all of my clients that have had acrylics on had a pretty weird odour to them so i'm not sure if they ALL had mma or if thats what acrylic just smells like

Acrylic does have a pungent smell when you're applying it but not normally once it's cured x

Like Blossom says, there is an initial smell, but the fishy smell when you file MMA is something once smelled never forgotten!

Oh god, I'm supposed to be removing acrylics next week for one of my regular clients. I know she got them done at an nss salon (she got them there before she knew I had started doing them). I'm dreading it now, any good tips on removing them? And ugh, some places file the natural nail away from underneath?! [emoji40] Why? That literally makes me shudder.
