Up until four weeks ago, I was a severe nailbiter, I actually only had 1mm of nail on one finger it was that bad but after seeing a nasty picture of bitten nails, I stopped then and there and have been growing them since.

Yesterday I got my first ever set of acrylics and after lurking and reading lots of posts about extensions for nailbiters, I made sure they were kept short (just past the end of the fingertip) and had them painted dark so that they didn't look ridiculous and I would get used to having nails a lot easier than if I'd gone for long ones.

The only problem I have is, since having a bath this morning, they've started to itch and ache underneath and occasionally it starts stinging. Is that normal? Is it just the acrylic settling or something?

I don't really know much about nails other than mine looked truly horrific and still do despite not biting them but I don't think they're supposed to be itchy or achy.

Help?

Nail enhancements are not supposed to be itchy and stingy...... I have a question - did the Tech apply tips or did she put the liquid/powder mix directly onto your finger?

The reason I'm asking is it could be an allergic reaction, but knowing what the tech did might help make things clearer......

She scraped off my nails with a chisel type thing and then added tips before putting on the acrylic :)

ETA: On a couple of my fingers, there was 50/50 skin and nail because of how bad they were before I stopped biting but she said it should be okay to apply the tips with nail glue and that I shouldn't expect them to last as long as other people's extensions did.

Hi Sephrenia

Your tech seems to have followed the recommended course of action for a nail biter, and is correct in saying they won't last as long as other client nails ...

What you are experiencing will be one of several things...

1) The most likely. As you have not had enhancements before, it is your body sending signals that something foreign is stuck to you... It's almost like a hyper sensativity because it's not used to having the end of the finger covered...
Especially if the tip has been adhered directly to the skin, this can have a 'pulling' and sometimes a 'tight' or 'uncomfortable' feeling...

Note: after a bath your skin swells for up to 8 hours (average) and this will be putting aditional pressure on the bond between adhesive and skin...

2) Unlikely, but worth noting. You may be having an irritation reaction, this will be noticable by a redness/ swelling/ itchy burning sensation that is constant...
If your tech has used professional adhesive then there is only a very low chance of this happening as ethyl cyanoacrylate (medical superglue) is very low allergen rated...

If you develop these systems, then go back to your nail technician for assesment...

hope that helps

Hi Envy,

Thankyou so much for that reply. The itching isn't constant although the achy bit is and I did wonder how much of it was just my hands adjusting to having nails on them. I'll keep an eye on them and if any of the symptoms you mention start occurring, I'll go back to her :)
