I have always been interested in statistics - factual ones!

I would like to know where to get information on the following:

No. of nail technicians - say in the UK

Market share of those technicians to which nail brand.

I am always reading in the magazines that such and such a brand is the market leader surely they can't all be LOL.

I think this would be a good survey for our nail magazines to get into.

What do you all think?

Would be interesting if the magazines run such a poll but would it still be acurate?
do all nail technians subscribe to profesional magazines?
Maybe it would be better if insurance companies tried to acces this information.

I agree Fiona. I think it would be really interesting if the magazines over here could do that. I'm sure I've seen this sort of thing done in the US though, like Lucia mentions, what of those technicians who do not subscribe. However, if they got together with, say, insurers/organisations as well as perhaps distributing a questionnaire at shows even, I wonder if that could give a good idea on the kind of figures we are looking at here in the UK?

I think it would make interesting reading, but as the others have said, would be very hard to do accurately.

Yeah, that would be really interesting. Funnily enough, I thought about creating a poll on here to ask geeks which brand of L & P they considered to be the best. Polls are anon aren't they? That way, we might get an accurate picture. Maybe a poll where we didn't have replies, just a vote.

Maybe it's all a bit too much hard work and I'll just forget I ever mentioned it. I'm knackered. xx

waaah! Kimmi I couldn't vote cos I don't use l&p. But would be an interesting poll, you may need to have it that you can answer more than one cos I use fabric# and Brisa.

Good idea xxxx

Wouldn't we all like accurate figures on these points ... especially the distributors!!

Surveys have been done in the past by the magazines re number of technicians etc. They are totally inaccurate because there are so many 'undercover' technicians and hobby technicians and most of them do not take the trade magazines ... in fact only a very small proportion of the people doing nails even subscribe to the professional nail magazines.

Not to mention the apathy among the nail technicians who never bother to fill out these surveys (it takes time and a trip to the post office and then the cost of a stamp etc).

Over 15 years in this industry has taught me that the single largest thing that holds us back (re standards and professional associations etc is APATHY.) This is not unique to the UK but all across the world.

As far as market share is concerned though, we do know the figures and things like turnover can be found out from the appropriate place.

I suppose the only possible way to get a true answer would be to combine information from a variety of sources - wholesalers, manufacturers, yellow pages ads, pro associations, magazines...
But of course that would be impossible logistically - very expensive and complex.

You could get a representative sample of techs by taking info from a single source, but to get the best result, it would not be so good for the sample to be self selecting (ie, relying on them getting back to you) but rather to pick a sample of people and ask them all, including the ones who did not want to take part.

My Lil Brother works for one of the biggest (if not THE) Marketing/advertising comps in the UK he says the information he has access to is amazing and he can find out sooo much info on busines'. I wanted to know how many Techs are in the the UK but he was like yeah give us a couple of grand and you can have the info!- Big Brother is truly watching and raking in the dough all because we didnt x a little box!
