i was a mua and not a beauty therapist but used to ask the brides to prep own skin before i arrived, however i did used to use moisturiser which a little matt and worked brilliantly as a base. it was french and cant for the life of me remember the name, but all the mua were using it at the time perhpas embryolisse or something like that?
also swear by mac's prep and prime

Yes it's Embryolisse, or at least that is the one I have been recommended. It's available from Screenface x

Basic rule is always moisturise. Preparing the skin before makeup is vital, extremely vital for mineral makeup as it dries the skin.

Good makeup companies will supply a base. Our best-selling face product is an eye base used under any other brand of eyeshadow protects the skin, makes the shadow last and fills in fine lines.

We have two natural bases for the face.

Hi ArtdecoCouture. Can I ask which mineral range you are using? I use a mineral range and do not find that it dries the skin, even on my very dry skinned clients?

I'm very oily skinned and still use moisturiser prior to make up application. Rose hip oil works beautifully on oiler skins.

Can anyone help me?
Sorry to move in on this thread but my problem comes under the same sort of thing!
I have really oily skin! I'm not trained in facials or anything so I know nothing about this...
Can anyone recommend a good way to get rid of oily skin?
Preferably not to expensive but if it has to cost an arm and a leg I would be willing to pay for it! x

Hi Lou,

I also have oily skin.

Avoid using a oil based foundation, try using a primer i use one from the bodyshop it's a clear tube with silver lid i paid £10 for it but it lasts a long time and although it feels like you are just putting more oil onto the skin its really good as its designed to give a matte affect.

Perhaps buy one of the dermologica travel kits they're around £25 in most salons you get a small dermologica wash bag with a cleanser, scrub, lib balm, toner and a moisturiser and some sample face masks. they very but this is what i got on the one for oily skin.

I used this on my skin on a morning and it was amazing. it is hard paying £25 for small size though. If you can buy one full size a month. x

Good thread, even if a bit old, I've got combination skin, typical T zone, now my oily parts are very oily and the dry parts very dry.
For a very long time I struggled trying to sort this out then I started to seriously look at adding makeup to my sevice menu and found a couple of real gems on you tube.
My routine is none sented baby wipe all over to give me a clean canvas.
Then my personal fav is the original oil of oley beauty fluid. It's light enough to put a dab on my T zone and a dolop on my dry patches. 5 minutes to soak in, then a quick blot on the T zone.
Then prima, I can not stress enough how this has changed my make up.
With a prima on I can use mineral makeup with out worrying about it clogging on the grease patch or flakeing on the dry bits and a liquid foundation no longer slides of by lunch time.
I used to use a pressed powder all over my face because I hate shine but have found that I get a much more natural look if I use a fine loose powder with a big brush.
When I've finished my face I use a cotton wool pad and a rolling pressing motion all over to set my make up. The only thing I touch all day is my lippy. Just wish I'd found this all out before I got to my late 40's :irked:

Bare escentuals primer or bobbi brown vitamin enriched face base are the two i use.I use the bare escentuals on times when i am only wearing concealer and use Bobbi Brown on when i am wearing the full on look.Although i only wear foundation as bare escentuals i find really suits my skin, and i have normal to dry now as i am older.

You want the make up to stay put,and priming the skin is crucial to this as you want to create the barrier between the moisturiser and foundation.Having said that a good quality moisturiser is recommended as you want the skin to absorb the moisture and not to just sit on the surface of the skin.

Can anyone recommend a good way to get rid of oily skin?

Have your skin assessed by someone trained in this first of all. When I'm presented with an oily skin I recommend a microdermabrasion and a course of glycolic homecare products. Sorts it out a treat!
Good luck!

:)

Hi, no two people are alike. Generally all makeup has an effect on the skin.

Mineral is by it's very nature a "dry" powder so it has the effect of a dry powder. It can't impart moisture, it can help skin retain moisture by acting as a barrier to evaporation.

The actual minerals in "mineral" makeup are calming and gnerally have an anti irritant effect. The same minerals give an SPF generally.

To scientifically analyse the effect you would need to know the ages, diets and lifestyles of your clients on top of their skin types. Your clients may have very good skin care routines and good application skills.

Regardless of any marketing hype mineral powders can't moisturise the skin.

Bismuth oxychloride, Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the three most popular "minerals." I say "minerals" because some companies use products that have never seen the organic earth at any point in production.

As a rule and as good practice as a Professional MUA cleansing and moisturising followed by skin prep is an essential part of application.

Artdeco has a really good makeup base, not a surprise but then any base would be better than none at all.

You absolutely and categorically can apply makeup without but that is not what we teach nor what we practice.

Hope this helps xxx
