NAIL ART

I am not qualified so this is probably an odd question, but is there a specific amount of gel polish I should be putting on my brush, or a specific angle I should have my brush at? Or any other trick that proffessionals use to make painting designs much easier? I am currently struggling to make designs not look messy. I would really appreciate if people have any advice because this is for a school assignment. Thanks
