Hi Ladies, I am looking to train as a nail technician. I am a qualified massage therapist but recently at the ripe age of 49 (am I too old?!!) have re found my old love of nails and would like to train and add this in my home business. I have scanned numerous courses but I can't settle on one. I live in Hertfordshire and I can get into London so travel isn't too much of an issue. Would I be better with a ITEC or VTCT or an NVQ? I found a post on here from a lady in my position that was advised to go with a CND foundation but that post was from 2010 and I expect there have been a lot of growth and change in the industry since them. Advice, experience and guidance would be much appreciated :)

I'm CND trained and still believe they are one of the best providers, there are lots of lots of more recent requests about training, it's the number one question on the site. Have a read back through, I'm sure I recently answered a similar question.

You might need to check with your local council, some (mostly in London but I'm assuming there are others) are requiring NVQ qualification, although I believe now CND training is acceptable for the NVQ, you're best to check directly with them.

Thanks Trinity, sorry do yu mean that some councls are asking that you have an NVQ to work as a NT from home? Sorry for my ignorance Im very new to the NT world. I work as a massage therapist my qualification is VTCT and have never had any trouble working or gaining insurance.

You only need a diploma course to work from home - Salons normally require NVQ 3 xx

I don't know the ins and outs, my council are not interested unless I'm piercing (ears/electrolsis/etc) but I know from on here the London boroughs are tightening things up. Whether there is a difference with home salons or commerical salons I don't know. You'll need to check with your individual council.

It also depends on your learning style and day to day routine. Do you like to learn in large groups or rather learn on your own? Are you independent, or do you need someone to guide you? There are companies that do provide NVQ standard accredited courses and insurances will accept these qualifications. They are just another route to the industry. Do a search and you will find these threads.

For me a key issue was insurance - I wanted a clear free choice rather than possibly be tied to a particular provider depending on who I trained with.
For this reason I concentrated on VCTC/NVQ based training. I did VCTC and as I understand it I can convert to NVQ should the need arise.
I could have this wrong, it’s so confusing these days but that’s what I was aiming for.
