Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's book The River Cottage Family Cook Book is great...full of traditional basics done properly. Nigella's How To Eat and How To Be A Domestic Goddess are also brilliant!

Ainsley Harriot is brill i have loads of his books. But i also buy books on certain subjects like pasta for example and there are loads in the cheap book shops
