Hello everyone, so I am pretty new to the nail industry it's only a year since I started a manicure course and since then I have attended CND Shellac course which I have been doing on family and friends since June.

I have just been offered a nail desk to rent in a busy hairdresser and I am really keen to accept this offer however I do worry that manicure and Shellac are not a varied amount of treatments to offer in a salon. Would people want more than that? ie. enhancements?

I am also not sure if there's anything else I should be looking into or should know as this will be a huge step for me going from a full time employed job to completely self-employed!

Any kind of help and advice would be great!!

I wouldn't jump completely from employed to self employed unless you have no life commitments such as rent/mortgage or children to worry about or you have a big amount of savings you can live off of. When self employed it's your responsibility to get clients, it doesn't matter how busy the place is where you're renting and marketing takes time and money. Also worth looking into the competition in the area because as a generalisation the industry is very saturated.

I don't want to put you off but you want to be realistic :)

Thanks for your reply! At the moment I do have bills to pay but I don't have a mortgage or kids and I do have a bit of savings to fall back on so this is why I feel now is the right time or I may never commit myself to it again. I know the area as I have lived here my whole life and know there are only 2 other salons that provide nail treatments so there is not much competition. I completely understand it's my own responsibility, the salon owner has been very helpful though in that I can advertise through their page etc.

If you aren't offering nail enhancements as well I would have thought you run the risk of clients going to one of your competitors instead. Even my clients who normally only have gel polish sometimes have the odd nail tip if they've broken a nail and I also find overlays over the natural nail are very popular.
