Hi All, I just joined salongeek from a recommendation.

I've NEVER had hair extensions and i've been growing my hair for about 3 years with trims to keep it healthy. To be fair, it's now in excellent condition but i'm fed up waiting to grow my hair anylonger.

My hair is just above my chest and its quite full and naturally wavy/curly. I've been reading up on all the different types of hair extensions I could get and i'm pretty excited. It's down to two, microbeads and glue in.. And I really don't know what to be doing???

My biggest issue is maintenance and damage, typical I know but as I've never used extensions other than clip ins for a night out i'm actually nervous? I just really don't want to damage my hair.

Is there anybody out there that can give me some advice?

Sorry for the long winded message but any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Jane

Hi Jane,

Neither method, when applied/removed correctly by a professional should cause damage to your natural hair. Most damage that you hear about is caused by clients trying to remove their own extensions and tearing chunks of their own hair out in the process:!:.

One of the key things to consider is the maintenance of your extensions as many people underestimate the amount of time and expense required to keep extensions in tip top condition. I advise all my clients to use products specifically formulated for extensions (balmain do an excellent range of aftercare products including a fantastic brush).

You will also need a maintenance check after approx 6 weeks where your extensionist will check for any loose bonds and remove any naturally shed hair from the bonds. This check is extremely important as shed hair can result in matting.

As for which method to choose this is really a question of personal preference. Glued in (microbond) extensions tend to be more secure whereas microrings can be easier to maintain. Your extensionist should be able to advise you on which method would suit your lifestyle the best.

Anyway I hope this helps and if you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

Regards
Emma.:)

Hiya Emma,

Awh thanks a mil! Yeah I'm prepared for all this maintaining :p I can't wait to have long hair, I'm obsessed with Lauren Conrads hair if you are familiar, her hair is naturally pretty short but her extensions look really good and don't have that awful FAKE look!

Now I just have to find a fab extensionist for myself...

I really appreciate your time to get back to me..

Thanks again xx
