Hi everyone, I've got a query about Newbie Geeks. On my profile page under my name is say's Newbie Geek, and I was wondering where you can change it or does it change by its self??
That refers to the amount of posts you've made... as you post more it changes.

hth's

well i have always been made to feel welcome on here thats why i love it! And im sure everyone else feel the same. And its great that this has stayed as a discussion rather than a heated debate. It just shoes what true professionals we all are :)
xx

i am a newbie geek and i am trained in calgel, spent alot of time money and energy on my course and i really loved it, and i have a genuine interest in nails but i probably have said some silly things in posts/threads and its not because im not genuine its because there is only so much you learn in college the rest is down to experience and i am not very experienced i would be the firse to admit!! but i have to say i love that i can come on here and ask questions that may be basic to you guys who have been in the business along time, and not feel stupid!!
can i ask without it sounding bad, did you guys not have to start somewhere and ask questions that made you seem unprofessional too???

There is a difference between a question asked by some one who trained and some of the questions asked that just scream 'no training and fishing for free instruction'. Its not Geeks like us this topic is about. Training sometimes has gaps and sometimes when your out of the education environment and trying to get on by yourself all us newer to the game peeps have questions because we need our memory refreshing, just a bit of encouragement we are getting it right or what seemed to work in class doesn't once your practicing alone.:hug:

To all newbies who are doing training now or are waiting patiently to get a date, you are most very welcome and please do not be frightened to post.

If you think your question might be stupid - the only stupid questions are the ones you dont ask, but always wished you had!

Thankyou !
I must admit, being on a homelearn course right now, I am reluctant to post on the nail forum, but use the social group instead, as I get better and more confident, I will start posting more on this forum.

But I love looking at the tutorials, and the artwork, more in awe than to 'nick' techniques etc... by looking, reading, watching, it encourages me that one day, hopefully, I can be half as good as most of you on here.

I belong to another forum, totally unrelated to this one, and I was a moderator for a while, and I do understand what ticks all the professionals off here, the endless same old same old questions, the people who join just to be nosy and to look at our personal pics, the perverts (i'm talking about the other forum, not this one)

Without this forum, I would've enrolled in a particular homestudy course that wouldn't have allowed me to get any insurance, that, for one, is good enough reason to have total respect for all the people on this forum x

Well one doesn't wish to boast but .... eh hem ... thesalongeek.com is the largest website for Nail skin and hair professionals in the WORLD. did you know that we get more than 10,000 hits a day on this site? that alone should tell you how good the moderators are and the fact that you don't see the pervs etc is because we 'take care of them' quick sharp.

Actually I don't get tired of the same old questions because this is a teaching site and teachers get asked the same questions every term by all the new ones; it's part of what we do. Questions are encouraged. It occasionally irks me when ones say, "sorry for the silly question" as it is obvious that the question is not silly to the poster or they wouldn't post it!

We also do not encourage posts such as, "I'm having a problem with the questions on my homework ... can you answer them for me?" Because we won't answer them. there's no point we doing homework assignments for others. We will however be glad to point the poster in the right direction to find the answers.

New ones are welcome ... more than welcome. So ask away.

The issue that really bothers me is that this doesn't only happen on the internet it happens in real life, I was working in a spa where a massage therapist also performed as a beauty therapist but she was only qualified to massage, and a permanent make up technician who was only qualified in make up and cosmetic tattoo was also performing as a massage therapist and a beauty therapist.

There are also a number of marketing graduates who own numerous salons and don't know a thing about the beauty industry, they could also be lurking around on here trying to find things out, these are also the people hiring massage therapists and magically turning them into beauty therapists and vice versa.

This site was such a god send to me when I first found it, I completed my Diploma in Beauty therapy I had a few set backs in life and left the industry for a couple of years, by the time I came back to beauty therapy a few things had changed and I found it so helpful to be able to come here and ask questions.

When I first started out in beauty as a college student I couldn't even buy a simple clay mask without showing my diploma. These days you can get anything you want online. Its crazy! It makes our industry look unprofessional. I think that proof should still have to be given.

There is a number printed on diplomas by the board of education, I used to have to quote this number to purchase products.

2,090 people have checked out this thread and it's only been going a few days.

Totally agree with this,
at first I was like how can Nailzoo say this when he is the cowboys dream teacher with all the Utube videos, but then I reaised that its only one half of the whole nail deal watching someone and having watched a super sweet smile seminar 9 times in 3 days I can tell you it didnt really make me a super sweet nail tech back then!

I do understand where Nailzoo is coming from when he is constantly helping others and great teachers do always help others like Geeg said above, I too am asked the same qs and I love it as the students are totally knowledge hungry like myself. It does def annoy me when I see geeks falling over themselves to help people do their homework and offer advice when really their dist or educator would be the best point of call.

Think before you Geek - and that applies to me too

Hi girls & guys,

I am very new to this site, as I am from Australia, but may I say, I can understand what Carl (nail zoo) is saying, but then when I first started doing Nails, I was so thirsty for knowledge it was incredible, and I feel as though we learn new things / techniques everyday.

I love this forums, not only for the knowledge and ideas, but the friendships as well.

Thank you for reading my post, and thank you for welcoming me.

Cheers,

Trudy:):):)

I dont, I'm not able to work at this time so no need to have it just now............

I didn't explain the 'pervs' bit too well ! I belong to a plastic surgery forum, and as you can imagine, pervs think they can see pics of womens 'bits' willy nilly...so we kind of have the same problem, people posing as something they are not.

Being a 'pro' on that forum, and quite knowledgeable, i do sometimes skim over the repeated questions, but then I feel terrible, because once upon a time, that was ME asking that question !

anyway, i want to stay on this forum, and learn as much as i can, whilst training at the same time...I can only assure you all that I am genuine XxxX

Hi min11 I have insurance even tho am not yet doing that many clients down to my illness, I wouldn't like to even do nails on a friend or a friend of a friend without it, it's not worth it these day with everyone out sue ur butt scary.
When my last lot of ops are out of the way there will be no stopping me CND and EzFlow here I come Cant wait. so its practise practise for me don't wanna turn up at the courses dumb lol. I been doing nails over a year now but no-where near as good as the pros on here. :)

perhaps insurance details would be a good idea if you have had the training surely you would have the insurance certificate

Ruby
eh... honestly if I were required to give out something personal like that, I probably wouldn't stick around.

It's the internet. Nothing is private, ya know?

Besides, scanned documents can be photoshopped very easily

I know this and if I was to have a miracle and be able to find someone in this wretched blink and miss it village who would have enhancements I'd be insured.

No disrespect to anyone on this site, but I must be honest I don't know whether I, and others like me are welcome here or not.

I'm confused... Is this site aimed only at those who are qualified, who have spent alot of time, effort and money, and that actually work in the industry, or are people who are learning welcome to come here and post too?

Sometimes, reading through threads, I do feel like I am intruding upon something that is none of my business even though I have a keen interest in nails.

I would like to point out that since finding this site, I have learnt a great deal about the industry, and been inspired by some of the fantastic work I have seen. All in all, browsing around this site makes me even more determind to succeed and it's all thanks to it's members.

I agree with you.
You will find that some people on here think they are the best thing since sliced bread and that they know it all. Maybe they do but it doesn't give them the right put down those who aren't as good or who are just starting out.

This site is for everyone not just for the "experienced".

I think this is an unpleasant and uncalled for remark .. it is not constructive and designed in my opinion to 'start something' and spoil what is a good thread.

As has been said, every person is welcome here no matter what their experience or at what level their training. The key word being training or a desire to go into training.

It is quite simple ... What thesalongeek does not welcome are those who wish to 'use' the site and the knowledge and experience of generous people on it' to try to learn how to do nails so they can then buy professional products without any training and go into some sort of DIY nail operation. Now ... if you don't fall into that category then any and all are welcome and will be met with the usual generosity that the geeks display.

This site is not known for putting people down and neither do the educators or technicians here show an arrogant or know all attitude. If they did, this would not be the largest and most used site of its kind in the world.

Seems to me any attitude being displayed here is coming from another source.

Hi !
Another Newbie here- Guilty as charged , not filled in my profile yet!!
Posted for the first time yesterday,- dared to ask a stupid question about nail varnish!!

For the record - Yes I am professionally trained in Beauty (Oxford International College ) and Qualified .(Itec Beauty Specialist , Anatomy and Physiology)
I've recently returned to Beauty after a break, and living abroad, so I'm genuinely interested in my fellow professionals' opinions about brands etc. and also current trends. Thank you to those who replied.
I don't know why people should feel threatened by the so called ' imposters'. Your own training , skills and experience will always set you apart from those who think they can take the short cut and do it on the cheap.

After all you wouldn't deliberately hold back 'After Care Advice' from a client in case they learned something top secret from you??? Force them to eat the leaflet or you'd have to kill them in case it fell into the wrong hands!!!
They'll always be people who want to 'have a go'- they'll soon give up if not genuine, or like many people -will be inspired to get trained and do it properly. Remember -you get what you pay for.
Be proud of your expertise! and the fact that your opinion counts! You're flying with the eagles , not with the sparrows!! (Quote from workshop on Native American Teachings- another story.....!!!!)

Off to fill in my profile- Bye for now

Meridenxx

I find this an unnecessary post and totally untrue.

I joined this site as a total newbie, a month before I started my foundation course with CND.

I extended the same courtesy to existing members as I would in 'real life' and was met with nothing but kindness and support.

I asked my share of silly questions, which embarrassed me later but can now see that it all helps everyone to learn. Nobody has ever put me down, however new I was, but then I treated people with respect, was training, and had a genuine desire to learn.

I work from home now and the site members are my colleagues and in many cases have become friends. Although I am now more experienced it does not stop we wanting to learn more and what better place to be. In turn I love to help those less experienced than me providing they treat this site with respect and are genuine in their craft

I have asked some questions on here for both nails and beauty and to the trained eye they must have sounded so daft to be perfectly honest and in hindsight have made me cringe at a later date, but I have never ever received anything but a kind, honest and helpful replies always.

I don't think I have always been that good at explaining my self or my problem always, and sometimes I don't ask a question which is worrying me because I am sure I should know what to do but without the experience behind you it is difficult and I can see could come across to someone with a wealth of experience as unprofessional. Everyone that walks through the door as a client has the potential to have a different problem, we are human. So I have to accept that if in doubt, don't do it as I am still learning and that never stops but if I don't know then I don't do it, the client will appreciate honesty and can find a more experienced therapist. Even so I have to say all my replies have always come back with a lot of excellent advice which I have understood and been able to implement to improve myself and I am really grateful to those who give up their time to answer me.

I do try to start my thread by explaining my situation and what I am training in which does make me feel a bit useless at times but at the end of the day that is my problem no one elses so maybe it might be helpful to explain yourself when you start your question then there can't be any confussion. If you are honest I don't think anyone minds you asking a question and they can then tailor their reply appropriately, but it is surely true to accept that no one wants to give out advice for a procedure if someone is not qualified or taking the appropriate training, that is not responsible or safe really is it?

Hope that made sense, sorry it went on a bit. xx
