Hi
I have seen a chair renter vacancy advertised in the local paper, and I dont know whether to apply. A bit of background:

I worked in a salon for nearly 4 years, practically run it, never took any time off, as the owner would make things difficult. She was not a very nice person, made my life very difficult, I ended up leaving for health reasons, had a chest infection, kept working and this turned to pneumonia. There is more that happened, but I don't want to go into that.

I left after suffering from stress and depression, and it has taken 6 months to feel able to work again. I am now close to finishing my level 3 hair and start my nail nvq next week. I have started to do a few clients from home, but can not be fully mobile as I can not drive. I have seen an advert, which is in the next town, 15 miles away, which would mean travelling there everyday on the bus. I am unsure whether to continue from home, or apply for the job?? Any advice please? thank you xxxxxxx:Scared:

only you can decide really, its totally up to you, it might bring your confidence up a bit getting a new job and starting to build up a client base, theres no harm in applying for it

Hi

I rung the number in the advert, and I have to and see them tomorrow with my CV. Wish me luck !!:smack: xxxxxxx

Not everyone you work for will be like your previous employer. At least you have an interview so you should get a feel for the place once you are there.

I wish you luck

Thank you for yor replies

I am worried what to say to a potential employer reguarding my previous employment, and why I left. I was self-employed but was treated like i was employed. For example once In 4 years I had one day off due to feeling ill, and she went around telling everyone that I skiving and was lucky to have a job!!! xxxx

Good Luck for 2moro hun and all the best for your future, whichever path you decide to take xxx

Thank you

What do I say if they ask about my previous employment?? they might want a reference from her xxxx

A new employer may ask for references but it's then up to you who you give as those referee's so you dont have to give your last employers details for a reference.

If they ask why you left your last job you can say many things - you felt you needed a break from the industry to spend some time with your family, You didn't feel you had a future at that salon, You found your previous working conditions/times unsuitable.

Good luck with your interview. x

It is illegal for a previous employer to give a bad reference, so I doubt you have anything to worry about, If your attendance was good then your previous employer may be able to provide a record of your sickness as evidence for your new employer. Good luck with whatever you do, just go with whatever you are comfortable with.

Just wanted to add my best wishes for tomorrow. If they ask why you left the last place you could always say you were self employed there and, due to a number of reasons, wanted to try going mobile. You've since realised that you much prefer working in a salon/clinic but you're glad you tried going mobile.

Thank you for all your kind replies and suggestions

I think going back to work in a salon would boost my confidence, even if it was only a few days a week xxxxx

Yeah good luck for tomorrow. Look at it this way. it sounds to me like you worked for one of the worst and you survived several years. I would suggest that makes you a brilliant person to have working for anyone. Despite her complete lack of loyalty to you, you remained loyal to the job and stayed there for a lot longer than I would have put up with.

She sounds like a right old witch. You won't get another one like that. Most of us only get a witch boss once in our lifetimes. You've had yours!!!

thank you for all your kind words

I stayed because i love what i do. But the way I was treated has really knocked me:Scared: Even my old bosses mum has been supportive of me, so that says it all. xxxxxxxxx

Hi, i hope everything goes well with your interview.
I was in the same sort of situation when i was 18, i wanted to be a hairdresser and saw a local salon advertising for a junior so applied and got the job but when i applied to the local college to attend one day a week they were very hesitant about having me. What i didnt know was that they had dealt with the salon before and had refused to ever work with them again. And after working there for 9 months i can see why and i could then see why they had 6 juniors before me that all left some after 1 day some after 1 week. I tried my hardest and stuck it out for 9 months until my dad offered me a job because he knew it was making me ill being there so i left and that was 11 years ago and it affected my confidence so much with hairdressing that it has taken me 11 years to build up the confidence to go back to college and train to become a hairdresser.
Dont let this previous employer affect a single day of your life, move on move forward and im sure not all salons and owners are like the ones we have had to deal with.
Good luck x

Hi Miss hair

In the time I worked about 10 juniors came and went. They loved me because I would make time to teach them and would encourage them to learn. But all they got from the owner was criticism from their looks to clothes, that they were too slow etc . In fact, one of my daugters friends who is a level 1 student at the same college where I am doing my level 3 comes to me for advice about her course, and I help her with her course work, I also cut her hair lol  xxxxx

hi

Well I went along with my cv and chatted to the owner for about half an hour. He was very impressed, and I explained a bit about my last job. I am now waiting for him to ring me. And to top if off he was rather nice too lol xxx:)

Fingers crossed for you and sincerely hope that this position turns out to be all that you want it to be and your confidence returns.

Glad everything went well

Hi

Thanks for all your support. I am hoping to hear this week if I have got the job. I start my nail course tomorrow, so I am all excited. And I have had a few people come up to me over the weekend complaining about the salon where I used to work, saying the new girl is not very good, and is miserable, they miss my smile and happy nature. :biggrin:xxxx
