Online Nail Technician Course

Hi Salon Geeks

I would be really grateful if someone could please give me some advice on doing an online nail technician course.

The local college does do a basic nail course, but it is lengthy almost a year as it is only 2 hrs a week. I am really interested in undertaking a 110 hr online course from Nail Classes, NVQ Nail Courses, Nvq Nail Technician Courses Online

As I reside in Scotland and the course is a NCFE level 3 award (England, Wales & Northern Ireland) will this be seen as a valid certificate in Scotland and should it affect public liabilty insurance, if i decide to work on my own?

I would be grateful for any advice, from anyone who could help with this query or anyone who has undertook an online course of this nature.

I realise that online learning in this profession is a bit taboo, but i have plently of volunteers and would never undertake a paid treatment without being confident and certain of what i was doing.

What sort of nails are you interested in learning about?

I've no idea what an NCFE is but it isn't an NVQ. (Is it a recognised scottish qualification that's not available down south?)

More importantly, is it recognised by the main industry insurers? You should ring a few to check. No point having a qualification that no-one recognises! What product brands are they using?

An online course is probably fine to teach the stuff that can be read in any good textbook covering health & safety matters, anatomy & physiology etc. but how will you learn specific techniques?

I'd strongly recommend initially investing in a couple of excellent books that you can refer back to again and again...You can get them from Amazon and second hand one's are really good value.

If you have problems getting your mix right with L&P, or the correct shape and consistency with a Gel overlay etc. how will you find out where you are going wrong? I notice that you can choose additional 1:1 training at a further cost but why not look for that type of course in the first instance?

It's a slick website I grant you, but don't waste your money. Do some searches on here for 'nail training' and have a really good read through all the threads before making a final decision. Search out the main professional brands as they usually offer training courses and they are generally excellent with good trainers who really know their stuff. CND, OPI, Young Nails etc.

If the products and tools provided are low quality, you will simply end up having to fork out twice as much again for professional quality products. Think of the difference between Tesco value products and a specialist deli.

Please don't see my advice as being negative towards your career aspirations. I just don't want you to join the many that have gone before and regretted wasting their time and money on rubbish training.

If you want to be a good technician, you will need to undertake decent training.

Thanks so much for your advice, I am really grateful. I think i knew myself that it was maybe the wrong way to go. I know there are a lot of fantastic online courses but you are right its a lot of money if the products aren't of the best quality and if the training is going to be an ongoing expense. Shortcuts are not always the best way.

I will continue to keep looking and maybe just go on the slow train and do the course at the local college. At least then i know its a credited qualification and i have hands on experience. (excuse the pun )

I wouldn't go down this route. You need to learn technique, how to solve problems etc....best to be on a course for something like that!

I agree with lovely girl. I think being taught by a teacher face to face is better.

I totally agree with all of the above, i think that while this may work for some people I personally think it would be really hard without somebody to tell me what i was doing wirte or wrong! Good luck in your search lady xx
