I had a girl in today who was having a trial done for her prom, she was in with me for an hour and i put her hair up 4 different ways.

I charged her £25 for the hours work.

I then confirmed her appointment time for her prom and asked if she would like to pay for that today as well. i then explain that the put up on the day wont take the full hour and it will be £20 (£10 for the curls and £10 for the put up)

I then later had the mother of the girl come in saying she had no idea that it would cost that much for a put up and a trial. And she didnt even have a cut and how can i charge £25 for an hours work. I then politly told the mother that i had put her daughters hair up 4 different ways and if i was doin a cut and blow dry i would of charged £24 and it would have taken me 45 mins.

I gave the mother a price list when she booked both appointments which says puts up start from £20 and she asked how much the trial would be and I said i charge based on what i do and how long im with the client for.

sorry about the long thread but this has upset me as she made me feel like i had no right to charge that much money.

£25 is average where I am for a hair up. Personally if I spent an hour I would charge at least £30. Especially if I tried out 4 different styles.

Seems like you've done well - they had a price list, you've explained to the girl why it was £25 and why it will be £20 next time. Tell the mum if she wants to save the £20 she could do it instead?! Lol. People do not understand the expertise that goes into a hair up.

Stick to your guns - ive seen curls and a few strands pinned up in my area be charged £40.

That was the point that I trie to make to her. It looks like quite a simple up do but it's secure and it will last all night. I have one lady who regular has her hair put up but it takes me 5 mins to do so I charge her 5 quid as I can't justify charging 20 quid for something that takes 5 mins.

I put alot of work in to the girls hair and she made me feel bad.

Up dos are my thing and I have a talent for it.

Thanx for the reassurance

Xx

I'd charge your 5 min lady a tenner lol.

Listen you know your trade. You just need to have the confidence in it. If she wants to pay half the price then she will get half the skill. You are not even expensive!!!! Don't budge on it. X

I can't really help here (not a hair geek)
But I do know right from wrong!!
A price is a price and she knew that!

Do NOT let these clients get you down! They're all out there trying to p*ss and moan about anything/everything and don't realise how hurtful they can be and what an effect it can have on us!!

Be strong and put your foot down!
Are you still doing her hair on the day? x

No she cancelled and is gonna have it more natural. I would love her to go somewhere else and get charged more!!

X

Bet the daughter is raging!!!

How frustrating is it for us when we have trained long and hard for our trade and then to be told that we aren't worth £25 an hour!!!
I personally think it's too cheap....
I really don't know what people expect from us. They want an amazing job but they want to pay us pennies......
I am learning the hard way to stop under selling myself. We are a professional industry and we should be charging accordingly.
You all the know the saying.... If you pay peanuts you will get monkeys!
xx

Not a Hair Geek, but work in a hair salon. This is similar to the lady who sent in her 12 year old daughter for a wash/cut/bd. The girl is African Canadian and has the hair to prove it. Well, the charge for a young girl is $14 which is fair and reasonable. The girl asked to have her mid-lenghth hair straighten while blow drying. After another 30 minutes the stylist charged her more. The mother was very upset as the brochure says $14 for children...come on! :smack:

Bet the daughter is raging!!!

I'd go mental if my mum was too cheap to pay for my hairdresser for prom so cancelled it!

Wait...she was! And I did go mental! Lol x
Poor girl I feel sorry for her bet she loved the hair too, now been let down by her stubborn mum! x

This gets me mad...£25.00 for a hours creative work is more than fare. take out your running costs, grips bands, spray and products and your left with at least half that. some people just dont apreciate how technical this is. i hope she goes elsewhere trying to get it cheaper and gets a shock. you have done a great job and there are plenty of clients out there that will love your hair ups :) x

I think they got a bargain for £24! It frustrates the hell out of me when clients are too tight to pay for our expertise.

Thank you, you have all made me feel alot better and I'm glad I didn't back down!!

In the past i have felt that trials or hair ups for teenagers is not rewarding, if you put a discounted service due to age.

I feel its justifiable to charge adult prices for 16 yrs olds, they ask so many friggin questions, annoy the hell outa ya, wana look exactly like a celebrities, some can be rude and slightly condesending, then act as if they could so it at home!!

Last year we encountered one girl and her pushy mum wanted 4 hairstyles in her short hair, 4 looks for eyeshadow, basically think a clown, as she wanted everything to match her green dress. Man she was so annoying, the mum kept making bizzare requests, then intently watching and after all the work one of my hairdressers did, she booked, but never showed up. Thru the grapevine we found out she did it herself and tried to copy what my hairdresser had done. Cheeky mare! I was in a bit of a mood when i had found out, as people dont realise how much skill and effort is in hair ups and think by just copying, its always the sly kinda ppl!

Ive come to the conclusion this year not to do a prom package, if they want any extras they book a bleeding trial @ full price! xoxo

Well I have jus had another mother and daughter in and what lovely people they were. Loved what I did and can't wait for the proper thing and no complaints on price.

i charge for hair ups #1 coz i dont like doing em and hope the price puts people off , lol and #2 i do put a lot of work in to em .. i did one a while back and charged her $75 which is about 40 uk pounds
i know a girl that does amazing up dos and only charges like 25 quid and these are amazing , real arty and stunning if i could do hair ups like her then i would be charging $100 , lol .. or 50 quid , haha

Do you know wat annoys me? These people, by that I mean proms, brides, barmitzvahs....spend a fortune on cake, food, dresses and even make up, but when it comes to hair, they want t done as cheaply as possible. Y is it the hairdresser they try to knock. I applaud you ladies that can perform miracles, I can only do the basics with putting hair up, but that's partly being knocked in the past by a friend of a friend who booked me 2 years in advance for her wedding, clashed with good friends hen do, paid me £70 for 7 of them and moaned about the price. That was enough of updos for me!

Another girl I know on Facebook complained on their that she had to pay a hairdresser to do a practice on her wedding hair, when I confronted her she answered if she went for an interview she wouldn't expect to be paid for it. I replied why doesn't she have 4 bridesmaids instead of 6, and buy the wedding cake from Tescos if she wanted to cut corners, cos obviously on the day everyone will be looking at the cake and bridesmaids not her!

Arrgh stop me now! Xx

Hi, this is a bit off the original post but can anyone tell me what the difference is in just a normal hair up and wedding hair up? Im looking to get my hair put up for my wedding in september, nothing too intricate, just curled and the top put up a bit and back combed, im absoluely useless with hair so need a pro to do this even if it is quite simple! I have seen websites in the area (surrey/hampshire) quoting between 20 and 40 for hair up but when I call and mention wedding it seems to go over 100 for hair on wedding day which in my opinion is ridiculous!

Some people charge over the average for "bridezillas" lol

To be honest if it's just you getting your hair done I'd not tell them its a wedding - just say you want ur hair put up. I personally charge the same unless it's an out of hours or out of the salon appointment. X

I would never charge extra jus because it's a wedding. Especially if they are coming to the salon. I add on a charge for going to there house or venue and that depends how far away it is.

I have learnt from the past to always take a deposit that is non returnable under a month before.

I do put together packages but that varies for each bridal party and only includes one trial for the bride. If she wants more she has to pay for y time.
