Hi, this is a bit off the original post but can anyone tell me what the difference is in just a normal hair up and wedding hair up? Im looking to get my hair put up for my wedding in september, nothing too intricate, just curled and the top put up a bit and back combed, im absoluely useless with hair so need a pro to do this even if it is quite simple! I have seen websites in the area (surrey/hampshire) quoting between 20 and 40 for hair up but when I call and mention wedding it seems to go over 100 for hair on wedding day which in my opinion is ridiculous!

I had the same problem and had my hair similar to how you've described-one lady near to hotel in Surrey quoted me £250 (plus travel) to do hair up. That kindly included a trial, "with lots of different tiaras". When I told her what I wanted and that I had a simple hair accessory, she repeated exactly what she'd just said. Needless to say I did my own and both bridesmaids, but was annoyed that i enjoy doing everybody elses for their weddings but for once I wanted the luxury of having it done for me and they wanted to charge extortionately just because the word wedding was added. I strongly agree that if it's within normal shop hours, you don't mention the wedding! 

Sorry for ranting, I think that may have been a raw nerve-lol. As a hairdresser I would never charge extra simply because it's a wedding. It can be such a stressful time and feeling like you're being ripped off is so upsetting.

Why would you charge more for a wedding though?!? It's no different really to prom hair etc.... in fact i'm finding more now that brides are having their hair a bit softer and relaxed than prom hair. It's just taking advantage in a big way, thing is i bet they are busy tho! grrrr

Lol I know what you mean, it really has made me quite angry! The thing is with not telling them its a wedding, I'd hate for them to turn up at the hotel, clearly see its a wedding and then charge the earth for it! I'd rather be honest from the start, that way they can't take the pee! My bridesmaids are going to do their own hair and have offered to try to do mine but I was hoping for special treatment on my big day hehe!

The worst thing is one woman who i saw on her website was offering mobile hair up in that area for £25 plus £5 travel charge so I emailed her a photo of the style I like and she said it was pretty easy to do so would be £30 in total, I then mentioned the wedding and was quoted £95 for the same! I just don't get it! Im not trained in hair and have no idea if it is a difficult style, Iknow it would be impossible for me to do :D

Just to clarify this is not a website i have got a quote from it is just the style i like that i found on google images

i think everyone jumps on the wedding bandwagon because hotels , photographers charge more as soon as you say the W word .. i think hairdressers / make up artists do the same and to be fair i dont see why not , everybody else is getting paid triple more than they normally would for like renting a venue , room , ordering food , why shouldnt the hairdresser get theyre fair share too , lol .. but then maybe i am just greedy , hahaha

If u came to the shop I would charge £25 for that and then it would just be travel that I would add on. And that would depend on how far i would be travelling.

I charge between £15 and £35 for hair up. Ive got a regular who comes to me her hair is short, and it takes 20 mins. She gets charged £15. However you could have someone who wants hair washed, blow dried, set in rollers for height, curled and then pinned up, and it could take the best part of an hour. So £35 is a bargain, I could make £50 an hour doing other services so I'm doing myself out of money.

Onto the wedding thing.....when I get married I'm doing it low key and will just be telling people its a party I'm having. It's scandalous.

I priced a salon along the road from me, for a bride and bridesmaid trial and on the day, and a child just on the day, it would be £270. INSANE!!!
