Hi everyone, Im after some advice from those who have had the experience of renting a room and have also worked mobile. What are the pros and cons and in the end which did you decide was the best for you?:) Also are there differences if you are just starting out or are already established? Thanx x

I'm going to bump this thread up, because I actually have exactly the same question to ask!!
Come on Geeks, can anyone help us out?

This a real difficult one as there are pros and cons for both and in a short space of time i have done both.

Ok lets do a list

pros to renting

1. You will have passing trade, or trade within the site you have chosen ( eg hairdressers)

2. All your equipment is kept in one place

3. You have a higher chance of selling products as can be displayed in shop window

4. Ready made clientel

mmmm i am strugling here guys would any one like to add to this

cons to renting

1. BAD LANDLORD lol:)

2. Rent to pay wether have clients or not

3. Higher over heads, electric, insurance etc

4 need to pay for child care

5 lots of compertition

again guys please add

Mobile pros

1. You can work your hours around your family.

2. No need for child care

3. No rent costs to cover whether having good week or bad

4. No electric bills

5. Insurance cheaper

6 ok i stuck again

mobile cons

1. cost of fuel rising so difficult to be competitive with high sreet salons

2. Damage to your car ( wax pots falling over lol)

3. Clients not being in for there appointment

4. Slower clientel base build up as no passing trade

5. Some people do not want the hassle of having the smells and mess in there homes and would rather go to a salon. ( i have done matket research on this and this is a bigy

Home based salon/ mobile pros

1. you have the best of both worlds having the luxury of inviting your clients to you or going to them.

2. no rent

3. being able to work your own hours and being able to work seven days if required as already at home

4. You can be there for your children

Cons

1. loosing a room in your home

2. getting cought in your pjs lol:lol: i did today could have died

3. Kids noise, hubby mardy cos got to be quiet, dogs barking at post man mmmm not good

ok guys, in answer to your question i do not no. they all seam to have good and bad points, but i have to say had i not had a night mare landlord then i would say the shop as business just got better every week, but there was the downside of the worry of 1000 child care costs through the summer, the worry of not covering your rent. Being mobile and home based is less stress full but you need to motivate your self more. Ie not getting woke up by your client in your pygammas that not good.

Hi, i am also trying to make this desicion. i was told, If you are home based, you have the worry of 40% capital gains tax when you come to sell your property? i was advised against this for that reason, but i could have been misinformed xx

If you are working from your home and claim expenses for tax purposes then your house will be hit with capital gains when you sell.

If working from home, you need to check if your insurance will cover for it.

If you are renting your home, you need to check with landlord as his/her building insurance may not be void if you operate a business from their premises. As such, you also need to check your rental agreement as you do not want to breach the contract.

New tax regulation also says if you claim expenses from your home then HMRC will have the right to inspect your property! this means they have the right by law to come into your home for an inspection!

Best you get advice from an accountant...

hi, i have done both, 5 years ago i rented a chair when i probably should not have start up cost for all my products was about 2k which i put on credit cards (bad move), i had no clients to take with me so was starting from scratch, my rent was £50 a week and most weeks i didn't take this so had to pay it from my own pocket, anyway to cut a long story short, i ended up in a financial mess which resulted in bankruptcy.

So now i decided to start again and im mobile, only been doing it a few weeks and im already busy prob because its the holiday season so things are going great.

in my opinion if you have clients to take with you then you stand a better chance of being able to meet your bills and make a profit.

HTH

LMAO  how embarrassing!

Jo jos nails  i could have died, i had no make up on hair all over, she really did see me at my worst lol. It has been one of those days were you wish you could just crawl away. She went shopping whilst i sorted myself out and then came back, i gave her a certificate for a mini manicure as i felt that bad.:o

Hi guys, sorry I havn't responded until now I've had a really busy week trying to sort out questionnaires, clients, holidays and weddings!!! Thanx for your responses, Im doing some market research at the mo so Im hoping that will help me also. Seems it's different for each of us as to what works best individually. I dont have the option of doing a home based set up as I dont have enough room for my kids never mind my clients lol!!! Id love to have my own salon one day but not sure if I need to get experience doing mobile properly (not just here and there). Keep the opinions coming peeps there all really helpful xx

Wow you've received some excellent replies!

I've done both and prefer mobile due to the flexibility of it although it can be really hard work and petrol costs are just ridiculous.

I have a good base of mobile customers now, the majority of whom tell me they like the service because it is in their own home. In other words they probably wouldn't follow me to a room-based business.

What I'm trying to say is although you'd think mobile would be the first option to build up business to then go into a room, it doesn't always work out like that.

HTH! x
