Hi guys

I just had to share :)

I went to see a friend of mine who owns and runs a successful hair salon today after going a few times to get my hair cut (obviously) and telling her of my plans to do Acrylics, waxing and tanning. She had previously said I could have her room (albeit small) at the back of her shop. I am taking my tanning and waxing courses in the next two weeks so bit the bullet and went to see her today to get a few things sorted and to make sure the offer still stood .

She was unusually not busy so I seized my opportunity. She said of course the offer still stood, the room will need decorating, she said I can tile a corner of the room for my tanning as my tent is waayyy too tall becuase of shelving in there and she also said she didn't want any rent or commission!

I have to decorate and tile myself but hey, A FREE ROOM! I'll initially be doing Thurs, Fri evenings & Sat day. She also said she has public liability insurance so I don't need any, but as I'll be sometimes mobile to a couple of clients, I've got it anyway.

Is there anything else you think I need to consider?

To be honest, I would sit and chat with her about it again, just to make sure you ahve everything covered and correct. You will be using Electritcity and Water...possibly gas for heating....all costs that she has to pay for, and I would want to make a contribution towards those at least.

I would also ask how she feels about formalising the arrangement. I am sure that everything will be fine, but you never know how things change down the line and you would hate to find that you were out on your ear one day if times got tough and she got a better offer, without even the chance for you to discuss with her or have a notice period or whatever. Even worse, if you 'do' the room up at your own cost and then it doesn't work out short term.

And if you aren't actually employed by her, I would ensure you maintain your own PL insurance as I don;t beleive you would be covered by hers. Seperate businesses and all that.

Not tryng to be a party pooper.....just to add that balanced view as excitement can get us carried away on these things. Hope it all works out wel for you  xx

Thanks Zingara :)

I think you are right about my PL insurance even if I maybe have a few clients (for example on a Sunday maybe while I'm building up clients) that I will have to go to as I don't have space at home, although thinking as I'm writing this she did say I would get a key, so that might not be a problem, and you're especially right about formalising the arrangement, it needn't be anything fancy just some basic terms which we can both be agreed on.

It'll probably be well received from her anyway as she originally went into her salon with a partner who was meant to look after the books while my friend looked after the day to day running of the place. It took a little while for the penny to drop, that while my friend was working her butt off and giving herself a hundred pound a week wage, her 'partner' was having lovely holidays and bought a new car for her boyfriend, hmmm, doesn't take a genius to work out that she was looking after the accounts, only in her interests

I'm going back in on Thursday evening to start clearing the room and prepare the walls for painting etc, so I'll speak to her then about it. I have to say I was very priviledged to actually have been able to speak to her for more than 5 minutes today as normally, because her salon is so busy, it's only snatched conversation!

Thanks for the advice hun, and I don't think you're a party pooper  I need a balanced view cos it's all so exciting, I can't think straight at the moment :green:

I think this is a fantastic offer and a great start for you.
once things pick up and you are earning money you could always
offer to contribute a little toward electric etc as a good will gesture!
wish someone had offered me a room rent free when I started out.

Thanks Michelle

It is a fantastic offer, and I will offer her money again when I see her on Thursday. I know she won't take it though, so I may say about what you suggested. As Zingara said, I feel I should contribute something at least for lecky and water. I'll perhaps say we'll go for a 3 month rent free period then talk about rent again after that.
