Hi, I've just started renting a nail station within a hair salon and was wondering about reciepts from my landlord? I was under the impression that I need reciepts for my rent for tax purposes, as in I need them so I can claim it back in my tax return? Just like you do for petrol just checking. Also what counts as a receipt? Can it just be they sign a piece of paper with the amount on it or do I need to print out more official looking one? This is my first time renting so I'm not really sure what the correct way is. Thanks

The woman I rented a room from never gave me receipts so I got a petty cash book & wrote one out 'room rent to ****' and how much it was for every week. Then I had proof of my outgoings. (Think she was just pocketing the money & not putting it through the books) but I was doing it right & if they ever checked she would have to put it through hers too xx

Yeah that's what I was thinking of doing, I was just going to print of a reciept on my computer say something like how much it is per month or week, their name, my name and the address of the salon then get the landlord to sign it? Or do I need like a proper reciept book like a cheap one of ebay? Because like you I doubt that the landlord is going to put it through her books. Also do I need to write up a contract between me as a renter? For example something that acknowledges that I work there and what my belongings are mine and what hers are hers kind of thing? Like I said I've never rented before but I did see salon ages ago and there was a contract that he wanted me to sign stateing what I'm responsible for and stuff. Also he said in the very rare chance that the salon got burgled there's prove that my belongings are there and I'd be able to claim of insurance? Its only a small salon though, I'm worried i may come of as "too PC".

That's a good idea, I would do exactly that, then they also know that you're very serious as some take the mick a bit! I had a receipt book as I changed location half way through the year & it was easier to file but it's entirely what works best for you :) xx
