I guess the powers to be do need to be seen to be doing things that reduces worldwide consumption on fuel and which in turn reduces emission output levels.

How many light bulb's light up the skies each and every night across the globe...reduce that consumption by only 25% and that is a serious amount of emission output reduction into the planets atmosphere....im guessing many a polar bear will be grateful for that a year or two down line

In terms of UV output on low energy lamps...these levels,if any, are insignificant and something that really is not to worry over....in fact it may well prove to be beneficial particularly to northern hemisphere countries where there is insufficient natural UV to sustain the body's needs.

As far as costs are concerned these will simply improve as the demand grows thus reducing manufacturing costs.

As to the effectiveness of lumen outputs from these lamps are concerned this to will significantly improve (already is)through further research and development as revenue comes into the manufacturers from increased output sales...

It is difficult right now to actually gauge the effectiveness of this legislation however apart from some minor inconveniences to you and me right now, this can only be a good step forward to a much greener planet...not only for us but our children and there children

Some good points there, Collin! Now the main issue with the sodium vapour and mercury vapour lamps commonly used for street lighting is that they take several minutes to reach full brightness, and have to go through the same cycle again if the power is interrupted. So you couldn't put a nice motion sensor on them to just make them come on when someone was in the area on account of that limitation in their design. A bit silly really - but then the main advantage of discharge lamps like the ones used for street lighting is their efficiency in terms of lumens per watt (although the low pressure sodium ones are limited by a very poor colour rendering index [CRI] - most of the light they give out is limited to two frequencies which are both perceived by the eye as orange). So the technology behind street lamps could certainly benefit from an upgrade to make them work with motion sensors - again LED is a very promising technology here, but currently limited by manufacturing costs.

I did however read of some research into LED design using "quantum dots" a while ago - which the scientists claimed would very faithfully replicate the warm spectrum of a standard incandescent bulb - while using up less than a tenth of the energy - so let's hope they get it out of the lab and into production!!!

Sodium and mercury vapour lamps are indeed quiet energy efficient and make the ideal product to use when lighting large areas..all be it that the colour rendering is crap and they do take a while to strike and reach optimum output levels..but once up and running do the job they are designed to do....light up large areas at a minimal running cost factor.

LED development and research is and has been ongoing for many years....initially Phillips lighting were the fist to really start to develop these things going back some 15years ago...although the development of these lamps then were more for specialist usage..airports ,deep sea diving etc etc.

Over more recent years there has been significant leaps forward in the development of LED's for use in such things as skin treatments and are most effective indeed.

The focus has however more recently shifted to the general lighting arena since the whole global warming issue became big.... many good manufacturers are striving to further develop LED's for general use.

Oh and Ruth...whilst eating my burnt toast:eek: breakfast earlier I was thinking on the UV output dangers thing mentioned earlier in this thread and then I must confess I had a bit of a chuckle to myself when I realized that you are an ardent poster of many topics using your mobile phone where radiation level outputs are probably of more concern than the UV output of a low energy lamp mounted in the ceiling some 3meters away from you :lol::hug:

Ha ha Collin, I like your style!

And if not my mobile phone, it is my laptop with 2.4GHz 802.11g wi-fi - so either way, I'm getting nuked by microwaves every time I geek :green:

he he he ..the question Ruth is....is it worth it?:lol::lol::hug:

As a precaution you could always wrap yourself in baking foil..that way you reflect all them nasty microwaves onto your colleagues...one way of rising to the top...simply nuke em :lol:

I really don't care for polar bears........... They look cute and fluffy but there nasty scrotes and they are allowed to wonder the streets ~ like oh my god its a polar bear ~ polar bears kill humans and humans are no longer allowed to kill polar bears!

I don't think it helps when they have dead stuffed polar bears outside shops during mating season ~ I mean talk about red rag to a bull.....

You can reduce some emission from lightbulbs but every day something is invented that requires plugging in!

I have considered putting solar panals on the house but it does not save that much ~ think they have to be on there for 89 years or something before you break even...

So until polar bears become friendly then I am not interested in my carbon footprint! Cows are responsible more for global warming than the human race!

These creatures are moving into the towns because not only for the ease of rummaging through humans dustbins which is much easier for them rather than fishing for their food but because they are also having to as the ice caps are shrinking at an alarming rate.

The point is more one of no polar bears more than likely means no ice caps on this planet which means the seas would have risen way over the rooftops of your ,and my, house.

Weather this current enforcement on us is right to do or not there can only be positive benefits to us all in the longer term with these"early day's steps" the various governments are taking around the world and provided that we all act as responsible human beings and all do our part, big or small, in reducing emissions then this can only be but a good thing.

For me personal,my children and there's and im sure many others living on this planet I would prefer to walk down the high street window shopping rather than hailing a taxi boat to take me round lol :lol::hug:

Oh my Collin you have to start understanding Sarcasm lol!! The Polar Bear thing was a joke...... But this global warming thing is sooooo overrated! You don't see cows cutting their methane emissions lol!!!

You don't see cows cutting their methane emissions lol!!!

Methane gas ...as I understand it ..only becomes a pollutant once ignited..which is probably one good reason and also safer not to light a ciggy near one:eek::lol::lol::hug:

Nope, methane is actually 22 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide itself!!! So ironically it's actually better to burn it (which generates carbon dioxide and water) than to have it escape into the atmosphere as methane!

Although - according to my chemistry teacher at school - there have been reports of explosions in cowsheds when the farmer tried to light a cheeky *** in there - from all the methane from those flatulent cows!!!

haha you would think the farmer would know this wouldn't you if not from the smell alone lol! At least they have now banned smoking in the work place the poor moo cows are safe from losing their eyebrows :lol::lol:!

See I knew I was a little bit up to date on greenhouse gases :green:! All them polar bears are good for is a fur coat lol (btw that is a joke! I would not condone fur for fashion ~ just for keeping warm :green:!).

OMG in the pursuit of saving all them fury polar bears that means were all going to have to chase around the cows in the fields with our cigarette lighters now :lol::hug:

Or feed them excessive amounts of bubble gum...

Then you could have the farmers running around the field, capturing all the bubbles and selling them to British Gas :green:

Lol I can just see it now..children's entertainers following cows around and filling up those long thin party balloons and making a pretty little poodle dog for some kid at his 8th birthday party :lol::lol:

Oh my god pmsl!! You nutter lol!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:!!

Brilliant idea ~ patent it quick lol! the farmers need some luck xx

Anyways I like moo cows they make steak!! And I don't care how hard you push I am not signing up to the Polar Bears Fan Club!! They are why I don't live in norway!

The latest replies on this thread have had me laughting, but the fact is - care about global warming, so replaced all my lightbulbs. Then I read ythat the energy efficient bulbs were linked to migraines and eczema. I'd been suffering terribly with my migraines and my daughter's eczema had got worse than it had for years. So I switched back and both of us are much better. I shall be buying at least 1 pack of regular bulbs with every weekly shop from now on, as this proves that the new bulbs are not a good thing for all of us by a long shot.

LOL, I did have another idea, but figured that it would have made me Public Enema Number 1 (as far as the cows are concerned anyway) :green:
