please settle an argument between myself and a friend im doing her hair 2moro i put a post on regarding trying to achieve platinum hair on her roots she is about base 4 but her other friend had stripped all her hair etc etc and so her ends are quite white but to chieve this on her roots i think is going to be difficult so anyway she came with me to sallys and she pointed out the bleach her friend used and said it was 40 vol as her friend explained she would be using these now the bleach is the box of blue powder bleach she said her friend was going to use these on her roots next time and that she wouldnt need a toner as it would lift it to white with the 40 now tell me if its me thats wrong but is that not going to burn the hell out of her head and i told her she would be lucky to have hair left but she just keeps saying but her other friend used this the last time and she txt her friend and it is the blue powder bleach with 40 vol?? is this right as i always thought never put 40 with bleach and i dont think that bleach is even scalp bleach is it?? please help as im wondering if i am wrong
p.s my friend knows im putting this on so we can settle the argument lol x

Depends if she wants any skin left or hair for that matter.

Do an application of 20vol bleach, remove and reapply if it's not light enough. She will prob need a toner it's impossible to say.

If it's blue bleach in a blue box it's that tec niques stuff.... Cheap as chips and defo not a scalp bleach. Should use blue frosting, proclere.

She won't have a scalp left! My advice would be to do the same as the previous post

thankyou so much for the quick replies iv just called her their and told her to go on her computer and look at your kind words lol
by the way i think it was the techniques one to be honest im not a great lover of using bleach on the scalp and im finding this to be a pain in the backside(friend i hope you read this bit lol) i just find it a bit dangerous but i was planning on using bleach with 20 then using a toner called milkshake that someone had suggested in a previous post so wel see how that goes thanks alot guys i was starting to bloody doubt myself lol x

NEVER use bleach with 40vol on the scalp it will burn like hell! nearly all bleaches should only be mixed with 30vol max, which is fine in foils but even 30vol on the scalp is not great! 20vol everytime for scalp app then tone, u will not achieve a white blonde from just the bleadch as her base is too dark! hth x

hi thanks for comment yeah i said her scalp would burn and be nippy to whuch her reply was "yeah it nipped the last time but the colour was great" honestly shes lost her marbles i think she thought i was winding her up when i said that shouldnt be used do you think the bleach with 20 then this milkshake colour dont know if you have used that before? x

I had this done to my hair when I was training many years ago & yes she will have a head covered in weepy scabs, sorry for the mental image, plus my hair all snapped off lol 

No idea what milkshake is.

I would bleach +6% then reapply if needed, then tone with some color fresh 0/6 ??

the milkshake toner you are referring to is loreal luocolor and there are two shades to choose from, p01 which has a pearl underbase, and p02 which has a violet underbase, these toners are way stronger than wella relights blonde, but you really have to be careful when choosing between the milkshake shades, if its really orangy/yellow then p01 but use po1 when the hair is porous and has no tinges of orange? it will go bright silver lol!! be careful with these,

and btw put them on QUICKLY at the backwash, there was one junior who liked to take her time applying toners at the salon and the front of the hair was blueish silver and the back bright gold! depending on how porous the hair is, only leave luocolor on for around 4-8 minutes, and watch it carefully, it takes quickly on bleached hair. and if shes a base 4 use 9% but again just watch very carefully, i rarely do bleach and 9% on scalps, its risky!! look up loreal maijblonde or loreal platinum, these are gentle on the scalp but have high lift, xx

That's why I advised color fresh (not relites) as it's a true semi so won't grab as much as a quasi toner or a permanent. Sounds like if the ends are White blonde they will suck it right up

i dont like using 0/6 after a bleach, highlighted foils or full head scalp root bleach, it tends to leave bars on bleached hair, with loreal i always use luocolor milkshake and then with wella i always use 10/16 with pastel or 10/8 or for golden apricots 10/3 with one cm of /66 mix, always beautiful, and 0/6 fades like a bitch on full head bleaches, doesnt clean the hair from root to tip either very well, leaves bars, i always think 0/6 is best used on long length hair

milkshake luocolour or wella with pastel is the best by far on root bleaches

I like 0/6 as it's gentle enough to give you time to get it on evenly. I can't comment on luocolour but certainly in my experience putting a 10/8 on White blonde hair that has previously been done with 12% bleach is a recipe for disaster! However we all have our own ways of working. The biggest struggle you'll face is getting a base 4 up to White blonde tbh!!

yeah I use the L'Oreal Dia Richesse milkshakes to tone! nice! x

agreed!! even with 9% she will have to apply twice.
and do not use richesse to tone, use luocolor, richesse is too heavy on white blondes

Ive used Richesse milkshake to tone for years and its absolutely fine!!!!!!???????

Also u dont need to tone if its a white blonde!?

hi everyone thanks so much my friend just called there as she seen everyones comments and its made her realise just how dangerous using bleach can be so im so glad you have all made her aware of the risks its good to see all different opinions i know its hard when your trying to advise on someone hair you cant even so its very appreciated im just new to this site and already learnt loads of new things x

Either way, I would definitely only use bleach designed for scalp use.
As previously mentioned, the Proclere blue frosting bleach can be used for this.
It is oil based and has sachets of booster powders. The darker the hair the more booster you can add to the liquid bleach. I think you can use either 20 or 30 vols peroxide with this product. Not 100% sure.

Many years ago, we had a client with very dark hair, around a base 4.
We used a similar product to proclere using 20 vols and 2 or 3 sachets of booster powder. Her hair came up virtually white when blow dried, even without using any toners. It was beautiful. Just like Marylin Monroe/Gwen stefanni.
She did however have very thick course hair. I'm not sure if very fine hair would have withstood this.
