Shellac application - how long did you take at first?

OK so next time try, wrap all ten (remembering to time 10 mins from the first wrap going on) then remove wrap, remove Shellac, place a bead of CA on the nail then go on to the next until you've done that to all ten fingers. Then you can either file and remove cuticle or remove cuticle then file (either way round it doesn't matter), wipe of the excess CA and move on to the next finger. Then remove with soap and water (as said I use a manicure brush to help get any moisture out of the sidewalls) and dry with a lint free wipe. Get the client to check her nail shape and length and away you go. By having the CA on for a bit longer it makes it easier for the cuticle to just lift of the plate, so no cuticle removing faffery ;)

One or two pumps is fine, just make sure the pad is saturating without flooding the wrap itself so it's all over you and the client lol!

Yes I suppose you could think of it as a guide. I take that bit of extra time on the first coat and then its much easier for the second coat to go on as you know where to place your brush etc. You've already created the shape, it's then about getting full coverage of the colour with the second coat.

Good for you lovely! I saw your picture in the critique, I wish I could have polished that well when I started, I look back at old photos of mine and think jesus did someone actually pay me £25 to do that lmao! So just keep at it and your timings will improve, along with technique as your confidence grows. :) xxx

I'll give that a go Happyfeet, it makes sense. What lint free wipes do you use?

I'm actually looking forward to my next reshallac appointment now :) x

I've been doing Shellac a year on the 16th May. I take 40 mins for plain colour plus another 5-10 mins for French. If someone's having it removed first I add on 15 mins. When I first started I took about an hour for plain colour 1hr15mins for French. I used to not wrap the hands in towels when the remover wraps were on, since I've started wrapping the hands it's made the removal much easier xx

I use plain old kitchen roll cut in to squares, works for me and no fuzzies insight! ;)

Aw that's brilliant news, you'll be fine, just don't over think chuck and let us know how you get on. You can do it woman! xxx

When I started it was taking me 2 hours!

I'm a bit to particular about the cuticles.

I've reduced it to 1 1/2 hours with removal. But I know I still need to be quicker. I've been doing shellac for 6 months.

What part of application is taking up your time ?
6 months doesn't really mean much, as a salon tech could be doing on average 6 clients a day 5 days a week....so could have done well over 700 Shellac treatments in that time, therefore will have the skill, experience and confidence to be applying in 30 minutes and removing and redoing in 45 mins.
However a part time or mobile with another full time job may only be doing a few treatments a week, and won't build their confidence and speed as much.

Dnx I only qualified in may also, I had a bit of an advantage as have been doing enhancements for quite a whole so prep is 2nd nature. I seem also to take longer than a lot of the people on here but as they say practice makes perfect. Keep asking questions in here if your stuck as the advice is invaluable

I do evenings & weekends only at the moment.

Removal 30 mins, cuticle work 20 mins, polishing 45-50 mins.

My longest was my second set which was an hour and due to chatting. My first removal took longer than I expected too.

I soon found that with plenty of practice I was down to 30 minutes. Which I still am for colour and French, longer for nail art.

If I'm doing a reshellac I need an hour.

I found the wraps quite faffy too and switched to magis wraps, which I love!

Keep practicing and try keeping a timer nearby so you remember to focus. Tutorials are fantastic too. There is one of the perfect polish by Geeg that I recommend and anything by fingernail fixer. Good Luck xx

Goodness! You need a bit of help and you've received a lot here.

Do you work alone? I'm a big believer in working with other people before working alone. There are so many areas where you can save time. Such as desk layout, techniques for wrapping, believing PEP is sufficient (and not over doing it)

Also, application of each layer needs to be fast and not over working it. Just a few strokes is enough.

I would suggest a 121 just to go over layout and techniques.

There really is no need to take longer than 30 mins for a Shellac manicure with 15 mins extra for removal

I do overdo it when it comes to cuticle work.

My educator has gone through the times I need to take, and I'm trying very hard to quicken things up.

Removal takes me half an hour.

I take a long time as well. I only work weekends though so I figure if I was full time I would be a lot faster due to the extra practice. PEP takes me longer than it should as does application. I definitely "faff" (never heard that word before salon geek but I like it) quite a bit. I am constantly finding stray fuzzies that take up my time as well. I have some clients with beautiful nails that never need much work at all. Other clients have really short nails, thick, hard eponychium, etc., and it takes me forever to make those types of hands look presentable.

Bump for great info :)

Thanks mum! I'd be delighted if I could get it down to 30 mins inc PEP - wow!

I'm looking at booking a 121 with my educator to get things moving for me.

I do work alone, not much choice there.

Most of the time, when the lamp goes off I'm on the 3rd or 4th finger and occasionally I beat the lamp.

PEP is taking way too long, prob over thinking it. Yesterday's appt, Brisa Lite and Shellac (pink) lifted much better with nourishing remover & CND wraps, although, still not completely off so needed orange wood stick. Timed 12 mins from first wrap on and did PEP on each finger as I went like happyfeet suggested, giving the CA a chance to do its work. Confidence is growing and I'm trying to keep it down to a minimum of strokes as shown in the CND video.

Really appreciate the feedback and help ladies x

Coming along, still taking too long trying to be neat :/

On my Brisa Lite Smoothing training the other week, I was told when you combine BLS and Shellac you need to wrap for twenty minutes. Can I ask where you got twelve minutes from?

From an employer point of view I allow a new therapist an hour for Shellac application but cut the time down regularly to get them up to speed.

I think that when you have a time constraint and a bit of pressure on you , you have to speed up.

Set a timer and allow yourself x amount of time for each segment of your service and cut it back after a specific period of time....say 5 minutes off your pep time each week and 5 off your polish time etc

Experience, confidence and speed go hand in hand but in order to be successful and make money ( which is everyone's aim) you need to nail down your times.

I may have got it confused. One of the more experienced geeks will confirm, I'm sure.

When I use Brisa Lite Smoothing with Shellac it takes about 12-15 mins to remove with the nourishing remover - an extra 4 mins compared to Shellac on its own. I just checked CND.com and they say 15 mins as well ;)

That's strange, I only had my Brisa Lite training a week last friday and this was what I was advised.

Yep ... 15 minutes is the recommended time for when you have used Brisa Lite Smoothing gel under Shellac (2 colour coats and 1 Shellac Top Coat). If you use more product, then it will take longer.
