Why do you think it was so popular for so many years though ? I agree foils are better but that doesn't mean to dismiss using a cap as unprofessional, the people that claim it is are admitting to never used them and to be honest would probably struggle to use them, I've never had a problem with the poly caps x

Each to their own.

I think cap highlights were popular because they don't require any skill in comparison to foiling.

We had to use caps for highlighting to complete one assessment in level 2 and I always felt the results were poor. You can't blend colours and there's no finesse with the finished look.

Sassoon doesn't teach cap highlights, I wonder why???

Who said it was unprofessional?

Each to their own but it's never been used in the sort of salons I've worked in.

The "horror" of them being used is coming across as if it's unprofessional to use them and I suppose it is each to their own, just because there's better methods now like foils mesh etc doesn't mean anyone who uses them are shock horror, it just means they haven't moved on with the times xx

Definitely agree it's the easier option but you would also be amazed at the amount if people that can't use a cap, when I first started I had to use caps I always had great results never had complaints, it's not as easy as putting on 2 poly caps then pulling holes through, as I said definitely agree foils are better although I'm so used to using meshes I'm still getting used to foils lol x

I used to love Matrix colour graohics pulled through a cap. I had no end of techniques for achieving different effects using a cap including an ombre type thing :)
Not done it for at least 12 years though, more for the comfort factor then the fact it is an out of date effect.

It's definitely an out if date technique lol makes me feel slightly old lol I'm still working on this one client who still gets them but as they say if it's no broke don't fix it haha xx

Well , 32 years in the business, owning 2 successful salons , one for 16 years and the other for 10 ....maybe being able to offer a full range of techniques for all age groups and types of hair. Even 32 years in I would never dismiss any technique, and looking at the movement of techniques coming in , it's becoming more free hand ....so is this the end of foil? ....no! ..I think not, it maybe a youthful attitude to dismiss practice of days gone but I feel the streaking cap has served me well over the years and I would imagine continue too, as will foil .
One of my regular uses of the dreaded cap is lifting colour off, very controlled, low risk of damage , full application within minutes...and would NEVER use 60 vol.........hope Mr Sassoon not turning on his grave

Exactly! My disgust wasn't at the use of a cap, but at the use of 60vol. x

I don't think sassoon would be interested in cap highlights. By the way just because I don't the idea doesn't mean everyone can have a strop about it. People use to say how uncomfortable it was to have the cap on. And for you to say I find it unprofessional or horror is just twisting words when I never said that look at my comments first before judging me and causing ****. For me that's how I feel it's entirely up to you what you do in your salon.

Just to clarify I said it's coming across as if it's unprofessional so like we both said each to their own xx

Yes it is when a stylist is overlapping on bleached hair.

Think wev got our wires crossed, that of course is xx

It's ok. People on here need to read comments instead of jumping in and pointing a finger. Oh my god I've seen posts on salon geek and didn't like them I just ignored it and moved on.
Anyway goodnight I'm off for a beer

A very 'old school' colleague of mine still thinks it's acceptable to do cap highlights using 60VOL sometimes even using heat as well. But this is fine apparently because it's not touching the scalp.
I am appalled obviously.

My god! Can you still get 60 vol? I thought that stuff was banned yrs ago and rebranded it as demestos lol

I was shocked when I saw it being used. When I was training I was told you couldn't get it anymore as well. I've seen on the bottle it says 'not to be used undiluted for cosmetic purposes' . I'm pretty sure if anything was to go wrong and someone was to pursue a claim, my colleague wouldn't have a leg to stand on! x

My college had 60 vol for creative colouring on the blocks
