Hey geeks,
Just a quick one. im a mobile hairdresser and find it quite difficult doing skin testing..most of the clients are friends of family only do about 4 all over colours.. Do you guys use declarations if they cant do the skin test? i am wondering weather to maybe get the ones that are like a little tattoo and post them out to clients and then get them to sign to say they have used it .. Much help needed.
Look 4ward to reply xx

This is a tuff one! Your talking about colour start patch testing. I currently use them but spoke to my Insurance last week and they said doing this would not cover me!!!! I'm so annoyed iv invested £100 in this product and now I'm being told it won't cover me! Only the actual product that you are going to use will.

Disclaimers are pointless they will be dismissed straight away in court. They mean nothing! I just have a form they sign to say I have done a patch test on them.

Its really a hard situation with this one!! I'm still using the.colour start because I still have a lot left!

I asked my Insurance about mixing some and posting it to a client, they told me no

I'm interested to see what replies you get

I think you could buy the product colour start i think its called. Personally i dont use it, i like to mix a bit of the desired tint and peroxide, and have that overall experience of a consultation to get exactly what they want, if they have had any reactions in the past etc
Part of the l'oreal professional service is to give a comprehensive skin allergy test, when i invested in matrix, i got a professional health & safety kit, which most ppl can get regardless if they are mobile, you simply have to request it. It contains a poster, dvd, a manual and mini record cards one for client to keep and one for salon. (this way if this personal ever wanted to go elsewhere you have a record of when their last skin test was) I know its a bit too much info, but its worthwhile to protect you, even if you are doin mates rates! At least they'll take you more seriously! xoxo

I never do colours (full head) on new clients on my 1st visit...that way if colour is intended i have already seen the hair and can do a patch test ready for the next visit. I never do declarations either...if im unhappy/unsure I wont colour!!!

thanks for the replies.. i think what i am best doing is getting some forms together to say when i have skin tested and get them to sign. I can offer them a cut and blow and skin test then go back and forfil the tint.. but then again its a tough one as i am mobile, and the cost of fuel at the moment. It will be hard aswell if a client lives a fair few miles away...hummm, opinions welcome..

How are the colour starts not approved by ur insurance as they are a skin test are they not?? that would help mobile hairdressers alot more :wink2:

Always skin test, you could put yourself into a sticky situation if you don't, I always skin test & strand test products on new & existing clients regularly. It's part of the job

The colour start things aren't product specific. I know a few people who can use Wella but can't use L'Oreal.

I won't do a colour without a skin test. I offer to do the CBD and go back to do the colour.

At least you can claim back some of the fuel costs but I'd rather be forking out a little bit in fuel to save myself a claim on the insurance.

i would always skin test and also do a consultation form getting the clients to sign to make sure you dont get sued...:)

I use wella colours and they sent me out a few leaflets regarding this, I made up some forms which have a few questions on (ones that wella said to ask) that way I'm complying with manufacturers procedure (if that's the right word) then I get the client to sign the form to say that they have had a skin test and then again each appmt to confirm no circumstances have changed (ie, pregnancy, menopause and other contra indications)
As for skin testing..I try to fit a colour consultation/skin test in when I am in that area (if not, the extra mileage gets written down and put through my accounts) doing it that way not only looks more professional, it will ensure that you can choose the right colour once you have actually seen their hair etc

i am deafinatly going to go by all your words.. does anyone have a disclaimer form that they use or do they not bother with them. I need to do a form that i can use when clients have had their test but i dont know what to write .
