Mother left in a coma after using hair dye: Doctors probe chemical in L'Oreal kit as she fights for life
Doctors warn that even if she survives she will almost certainly be permanently brain damaged

a mother-of-two, is fighting for her life after suffering an apparent allergic reaction to hair dye
A mother who collapsed and stopped breathing minutes after applying a home hair dye kit was in a coma last night and has been given only an 8 per cent chance of survival.
Julie 38, may have suffered a severe allergic reaction to a chemical in the L’Oreal Preference product.
She remained on a life support machine last night, three weeks after she used the dye, as her family continued a bedside vigil.
Doctors have warned her devastated husband Russell that even if she survives she will almost certainly be permanently brain-damaged.
No definitive link has yet been made with the L’Oreal product but doctors caring for Mrs McCabe, an estate agent, have asked for the kit and gloves she used so they can carry out tests.
L’Oreal has offered to assist the medical staff with any information that may help save Mrs McCabe’s life.
It is feared the chemical para-phenylenediamine (PPD) – present in 99 per cent of all hair dyes – may be linked to her condition.
Her family, who say she dyed her hair every six weeks and had never experienced any reaction previously, is now considering legal action.
They have contacted a solicitor representing others who have suffered reactions to PPD.

This is so very sad to read and really highlights why the need for proper skin testing, even with home kits

What a sad story. I hope she pulls through. Definatly highlights the need for skin tests. Home kits can be so dangerous, only yesterday I was trying to sort out a 17yr old's hair that had been bleached weds, thurs and sat using a home kit and still had ginger roots, yet the rest of her hair was falling out.
Am shocked family thinking of sueing already, surely that would be the last thing on their mind? Everyone is different I guess.

I saw this story earlier, I really feel for her and her family.

Is it true that colours in Canada do not contain p-pd? If so, why? Was it banned for similar reasons or has it just always been like that? And why isn't it a universal thing if there are known reactions?

Why do I always hear these stories when people use home kits? Are home kits more dangerous? This is just awful x

saw this in the paper! shocking... it is so so so so important to skin test in itially and to carry on testing every 8-12 weeks, anyone can have an allergic reaction at anytime, i would be devistated if this happend to one of my clients! i feel for the lady and her family, all for a little vanity! please test test test!!!!!!

Such a sad story. :( really hope this lady pulls through!!! People should see this as proof that the skin tests are not just an inconvenience they can save lives!!

This woman is from my town, I personally think all box colours should be banned, people think they can mess about with chemicals and everything will be fine and that's just not the case.

Her family aren't thinking about sueing (Don't believe everything you read in the paper or internet) but are contacting people who have had a reaction themselves, they need to go through a solicitor as they are trying to get it banned!
Julie is my cousin, It's heart breaking whats happened to such a fit and healthy woman, It just goes to show anyone can have a reaction even if they have used it before!

Things like this just show the importance of skin tests, I wont do a colour unless my clients have one, If they dont want one well... They can get lost!

There was a case about this in 2008(i think) a 18 year old died.

So sad, I never do a patch test when I use home hair dye. But to be honest I'm always going to the salon now as at least they know what they are doing x

I know of someone who suffered an allergic reaction to hair dye (PPD) when the colour was done in a salon. They recommended a skin test which she did but apparently it is recommend 2 skin tests 48 hours apart which the salon didn't do.

She is still suffering the effects 18 months on, she is massively sensitive/allergic to loads of things, is on a regime of medication and has suffered relapses......

Horrible, I hope this poor lady pulls through.

Following on from the terribly sad thread about the young woman in a coma after a reaction to hair dye, what do you knowo about ppd?
I know very little except that its in most colours and can cause allergic reactions. Anyone?

This story has highlighted for me how little I do know about it and how we all should know as much about it as possible.
I've been looking into it a bit today but need to do more research. Nothing i'm saying here has been verified and could be rubbish, it's just what I've read online so don't take this as gospel, but the main thing that seems to stand out is that it builds up in your system, the more exposure you have to it the more chance of a reaction. And lots of countries don't have it in their hair colours.

Can anyone say if any of this is correct or not?

So so sorry Jen, I'm sure other geeks will join me in wishing her a speedy recovery. I hope you didn't mind me posting as I think any coverage of such news can only be a good thing for our industry if it brings to light any dangers. Big hugs x

Ppd is pigment used in hair colourants.Ptd are also used in hair colourants instead of ppds, however both can have the same effect.
There is a limit set by law about how much % of ppd there is allowed in colour products, and many of the over the counter brands seem to be just about on or under the limit.Google the research done in the states on hairdressers using chemical colours and what the levels in their systems are.Its shocking.
Ppd and ptds will build up in the system.People can colout their hair for years without reaction and then suddenly react.Anything can be a factor in a reaction including hormones,thyroxine/strong medication.
Ive worked along side a company for 16 years now that use a much lower level of ppds in their products, therefore proving you dont need a high amount for colours to work.Ive worked in the same salon for 15 years and my boss regularly travels around the world training salons in the theory behind colouring hair, not just the basics but about the reasons why we choose to use the product we do.As a full time hairdresser i certainly dont want these high levels of chemicals in my bowel within hours of absorbing through my skin and i certainly dont want to be putting them on my clients. As stylists we need to be really vigilant with what we use and keep our knowledge as new and as recent as we can.
More and more people will react and unfortunatly more and more will react badly like the poor lady in the papers this week, and the young girl in the papers recently.
Its not an easy industry to be in but i like to think i know what im putting on my clients.

I don't mind at all hun. I think personally the more people know the better, Her recovery is not looking good to be honest. Everytime they try to bring her out of the coma she fits :(
I had a customer in the salon today who colours her own hair with the same product and i nearly shouted at her to do a skin test, She said she had seen the local paper but it's ok it wouldn't happen to her! She annoyed me. I will be testing me now everytime i do my roots as i'm quite sensitive, I actually considered growing my colour out!!! Its bloody scary. I have been hairdressing 19+ yrs and NEVER come across a reaction so severe.
xx

Crazybek, what brand do you use please?

Hi coops.
Its called organic colour systems.Theyre based in hampshire,Lymington.
Check out their website. organiccoloursystems.com.
Please dont think im plugging a product as i would never do that however im of the belief that if theres ever a safer more natural option im all for it.
To the lady whos cousin is fighting,im so sorry this has happened.x

I'm not a hair geek, I found this Ban the sale of products containing the chemical PPD (para-phenylenediamine). - e-petitions it's a petition on banning PPD. I think we should all get signing!xx

Hi Cristy. i think personally banning over the counter colourants is the way to go,like a previous poster said earlier people think its a case of mixing it up and applying without any thought for what chemicals they are dealing with.Unfortunatly that old perception of hairdressers being floaty and airy fairy can sometimes appear to make our jobs look very easy.Only we know differently.x

I totally agree, I don't colour my hair at all, but I personally don't think box dyes will ever be banned (like I've said I'm not a hair geek) at least if the said chemical was banned, it would be a start x
