I've decided to take the plunge and go for starting my own business in the beauty industry. My (very small) dream would be to have a little shop with a nail tech station and a couple of sunbeds, with a view to stretching to other beauty treatments and make up in the future.

I've always dabbled in DIY nails etc but have never gotten properly certified. I work full time at the moment and won't be able to afford to give that up until my business is off the ground. So I was wondering if any of you could recommend a course in manicures, gels and acrylics in the northwest. I've had a google and there's so many and its so confusing! I've seen some really cheap ones but they're online learning (which is great for flexibility for the working mum, but seem far too good to be true!) and don't include any products. I'd prefer an evening course somewhere reputable.

What courses did you ladies take when starting out? And any advice for starting a new business? Did you go straight into a premises or were you a mobile nail tech at first?

I have a very similar dream. But I hate to say it I don't think you can beat college. Even after two years of nails I've been in a salon for 2 months and still learning loads and perfecting skills. Is there no part time evening courses at a college near you?

I did a course with The Training Rooms that I went to every other weekend for a year, whilst I worked full time which wasn't easy but it was the only way that I could qualify whilst I worked at my office job. Once qualified, I then worked at a spa before going it alone. I would highly recommend working for someone else - I learnt so so much and feel so much more confident now that I've had that experience and worked with other therapists. Good luck!
