Hi, I have grand ambitions to create a beautiful sunset colour melt on my sister’s hair tomorrow (she’s always a very willing model!)

I had planned on using a permanent purple shade on her roots (because of regrets and about 30% grey) into direct dyes on her already prelightened mids & lengths, but should I dye, wash & dry this colour first or can I melt permanent into the direct dyes?! Any advice this evening would be massively appreciated, I know I’m a bit late working out the logistics!!!

*regrowth not regrets

Yes, you can apply it that way by smudging the products together but the colours won’t actually ‘melt’ as they’re chemically different products so you need to think about what colours you use for the direct dye. It might be easier to apply the permanent first blending it down and wash it off before applying the direct dye.
I’d probably choose a purple similar in depth to the permanent and use that to smudge into the edges of the permanent and then melt it down into the next colour.
Also, bear in mind that the permanent colour is under the cuticle layer and the direct dye molecules sit on the outside of the cuticle, so when it fades, it might look odd in places.

Yes! These are the same conclusions I got to when going to sleep last night! Lovely to have someone back me up :)

Thanks for the reply x

Looking forward to hearing how it went plus a picture? :)
