Aveda and specifically Horst should be applauded for the eco consciousness that he brought to the hair industry. My point is even with that level of eco awareness, they use "evil" preservatives because they are simply the best, most realistic way to prevent total waste of the products through spoilage.

Nope.
1. Its impossible for chemical free as anything you can see or touch except for energy is a chemical (common misconception that natural is opposite of chemical when they are both the same thing)
2. All products (even the most eco aware) require synthetic additives to ensure that they do not spoil and cause problems.
That doesn't mean one should not support eco aware products, it just means that it isn't such a black and white issue as some might think.
