Hi, I paid for a course last year for a girl to do teeth whitening. I can not do this as its only a dentist that can do it now! Should I be able to get a refund for this course as the training people would have known last year that this was the case - feel cheated and waste of time and money :(

Sadly all the companies know this but are really happy to take money off anyone.

Good luck if you pursue it.

I totally am - The girl that works in the salon went to see the lady who trained her and she kept saying it was a grey area and you could do it on the sly at home!!

It's on watchdog tonight. The legalities of teeth whitening x

What's annoying is on watchdog they were slating beauty salons for doing it but at any trade show there are all these companies desperate for salons to buy into this knowing full well it's not allowed and most salons probably didn't realise. I think it is the tooth whitening companies at fault for letting it get into salons in the first place, they obviously must have known the regulations but thought they would make easy money out of people that didn't know better! Couldn't believe it when the girl was putting 30% peroxide in the mouth tho, scary!

That skype training was terrifying! Yeah they should be going after the training companies but also there's no excuse for not doing research before training in something new.

Hi, i trained as a beauty therapist last year but have been a qualified dental nurse for the last 7yrs. It's terrible that the companies don't get caught for this as its so dangerous to use 30% I went to the professional beauty show this year and there was a huge teeth whitening stand 'mega white' it think it was but I also thought it was illegal for them to do it. It doesn't sound like you will get your money back but I think you should keep trying it's awful how they get away with it. Xx

It says it all when even professional beauty shows allow such companies to have stands - so much for setting an example!

I've just watched the watchdog programme. I struggle to understand why they go after the poor misled therapist rather than these companies that are selling the equipment. I suppose it's the end user - ie the therapist that's in the wrong. I think it's appalling that these companies are allowed into professional beauty shows along with those selling watches, handbags, bluesky and all multi level marketing.

I now look at what big names are at beauty exhibitions to help me decide if they're going to be rubbish or not. I was quite offended after receiving a call from a company representing one of the beauty shows. He asked me if I was going, and when I said no, he asked me why not. I told him it was none of his business. I should have said because it's not for professionals, it's for any Tom, Dick or Harry who can afford the charges!

This is the correct answer.

Take Megawhite for example.

They were originally known as Dentawhite and did teeth whitening themselves.

They were taken to court in 2012 and lost (had to refund patients and a franchisee). When the GDC started looking they renamed themselves The Teeth Whitening Shop and focused on Groupon.

Groupon and the deal sites banned them as the GDC informed them it was illegal.

They then renamed themselves Megawhite and, this is the important part, STOPPED DOING IT THEMSELVES.

Watch the stand next time you go - the owners NEVER help a customer to the light, they have a PR girl hired for the day do it.

They train up salon owners to do the treatment and TAKE THE LEGAL LIABILITY.

Five Megawhite franchisees have now been criminally prosecuted (and many other non-Megawhite franchisees as well). Here is one from a few weeks back:
http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublic...-woman-guilty-of-illegal-tooth-whitening.aspx

Guess what they have done after all the recent prosecutions and bad publicity - renamed themselves "Ultra Smile Express"!

Just seen an article in one of our local papers. A beauty salon owner has just been charged with carrying out illegal tooth whitening after a complaint by a client who suffered damage. She got a conditional discharge and paid compensation and costs around £1100!
