I had my hair trimmed yesterday and the stylist cut my whole head-layers,ends etc with the thinning scissors-she didn't use normal scissors once. As a hairdresser I've never done this myself and just wondered how common it was. I only wanted the very ends off but she took near on an inch off by using this technique. I haven't had a good look at the cut yet cos had an updo straight after.

I would have freaked! I hate thinning scissors at the best of times. Did she tell you why she was doing it?

oh god that doesn't sound right surely? Is your hair really thick? Did you ask for texturised ends rather than a blunt baseline? x

No-she asked if she could use thinning scissors (knowing I was a hairdresser) which I said was fine-expecting her to use them for a bit of texturising and maybe a bit of blending. It took me a few minutes of looking then re-looking to realise she was doing the full cut with them!

It's a fairly new salon so I thought I'd use it cos I like to be able to advise my clients were to go if it's a service I can't do mobile or if I'm unavailable. I don't think il be recommending them!!

My hair is quite fine-she even commented on how fine it was when she was putting it up.
I was booked in for a dry trim and put up,she asked if I was growing it (which I am) so said 'just the very ends off then' I'm actually dreading washing and drying it.

Omg I'm scared for you!! :irked:

I've only been qualified a year (lvl 3(2yrs lvl 2)) do I presumed it was just a technique I hadn't done...plus I was distracted so didn't really think much about it til today.

Hate thinning scissors! my boss never let us use them he said they were for hairdressers who couldn't cut hair, I once had mine hacked into years ago I was like crystal-tips when I washed it lol, hope yours is ok it will grow out soon enough xx

Tbh the only time I use them is for blending a short cut (I like thinning scissors over comb).
I'm pretty positive that she could have point cut for the same effect...it wasn't as if it saved her any time,it took nearly 40 mins to do the trim.

That's a shame, see how it is when it's washed if it's not too bitty maybe some product will sort it out xx

ive seen this done before. . . if u use ur thinning scissors in a shimmy motion u can remove length as opposed to bulk, i dont particularly like it as i think it takes longer, but as long as ur not delving deep into the hair to take out bulk and it is jus the very ends it can be quite funky.
