So I'm just thinking ahead to once I do my courses to get me qualified, what would be the best option for a new nail tech... Working employed in a salon to gain some experience 1/2 years then possibly going self employed or to just start self employed whilst working part time to tide you over whilst practicing on friends and family?

I'm thinking ahead so I am certain on what to do once I am qualified and have enough confidence to branch out beyond friends and family!

Any suggestions, experience?

Following as Im also in the same position, I have two possible job opportunities.. One renting a chair self employed and the other being employed and totally unsure what would be my best option xx

Hey Steffanie!

Are you newly qualified? I assume so as you said you have two job opportunities.. Well done :) I'm confused and I'm not even on courses yet haha. I'd like my plan to be as smooth flowing as possible the idea of being in a salon sounds nice as you get to meet new friends and well within a established salon it would be easier to gain clients. But I am sure there are many cons to this also haha.

What are you swaying most toward? Self employed sounds nice in the future, but I would rather learn and gain experience from those who have knowledge and experience in the industry and hopefully gain good habits as how to run a self employed business that way.
Have a beautiful weekend!

Morning hun :) no I'm due to qualify early June but the self employment option are willing to wait for me and the other lady is opening a new salon in July. I agree with you I really want to work with other professionals too, she's well known and we'll liked so I think I could be quite busy with her. The self employment one is a hairdressers and they're wanting a nail tech to see how it goes but have been open a long time, I'd probably be on my own and would need my own clientele too to get going. I leave my current job next month so it's a big step with two kids to think of too :/ have you done any courses? I was thinking of working from home or being mobile for a while but my tutor advised me that it can give off the wrong impression like I'm an amateur and it's best to get straight into a salon. And tbh there are a few nail techs in my area that work from home n they're not great, good but not great lol xx

Ooh very soon then, how exciting.. What course have you been doing?
Yes they both sound like great opportunities, but for me for comfort I'd rather be employed so you are secured if anything does decide to go wrong (not that it will, it will be great!) and obviously you have to think about your bambinos too as they are priority :)
Are you leaving your current job out of choice or end of contract etc?

I purchased a spa mani & pedi from essential nails just as a starting point about 2 years ago, but as it does life got in the way... But I contacted them a few days ago and they said its fine to do it now as there is no time limit so that's useful.
After I do this I plan on training with gel two, then progressing onto L&P with CND.

It is daunting thinking about going mobile/home as you are on your own... Plus I think about going mobile awkward as you have to lug everything and risk having no table / pets / children and of course timing which may also become a problem if you are on a tight schedule etc. I mean it probably works for a lot of people but because I'm thinking ahead I'd rather know what I'm comfortable doing and for me I do think that it will be starting in a salon (also I think it looks fun being around girlies and having a laugh!)

Just do what your comfortable with and I'm sure it will all go as planned :)
And yes you don't want to be associated with them because I am sure you are wonderful at what you do.
