Hello,Im new to the site and wondered if anyone can give me some tips on starting out in the industry aged 44? It might sound nuts to a lot of you out there but I've been down a long old road to get to here. I'm not getting any younger and want to learn a creative skill that will gain me credible employment. I'm impressed with the training route to job part and I'm drawn to hair and beauty. Just wondered if anyone can give me some tips especially if you are near my age and just starting or have been doing this for a while and can give some good advice.

Many thanks

Hi Vella,

welcome to the site, you will find an amazing wealth of experience, insight and advice here. The search button will open new horizens for you and probably answer most of your questions.

Regarding your age - it's a number! Just go for it. Members start at young teenagers and go thro to geeks just a bit older lol (I'm 50 in Jan 2013 and know I'm not the eldest).

Welcome to Salongeek!

I'm from the US, so I can't recommend training but I say, GO FOR IT! You are never too old to do something you love doing.

Best of luck! :)

i trained as a mature student and throughy enjoy my new career, I trained at the local college and a day release which I feel is very importand. I am now a salon manager and feel age should not make any different to how good a stylist you become , but you do have a lot of skills that you can bring to training as a mature student so dont be put off . best of luck

Hi Vella,
I'm 38 and started Level 2 in Beauty (evenings)in September. I also felt a tad too old to be doing it but we have only one 18 year old! The rest are late twenties up to their forties you should go for it. I am loving it though costing me a small fortune but worth it.

One thing that worries me is getting work experience. To get a job you really need level 3 which I really want to do but they always want experience. I'll probably try and do some volunteer work in a salon and work from home too.

Don't leave it sign up now I promise you will love it, let us know how you get on ok.

my grandad once told me your never too old to start learning new things...he is coming up to 80 & is always telling me he has discovered something new. pretty sure he was learning french not so long ago so he can be fluent as he has owned a house in france for 15+ years lol. I did my course's with a few older people & i believe there was a few in their 50's,60's & pretty sure there was someone who was like 70. just go for it & good luck in which ever path you take in the beauty world, hope to see posts from you in the future :D x
