See straight away I am lost with domain names etc:green:
When you do your own on freewebs, do you pay an annual charge to maintain it?

A domain name is the name of your website and you buy it! If you google "domain names" it will give you companies that you buy them from..... Then you type in the web address you want to use and see if it's available. There is then a small annual charge to keep that address (£20ish).

Freewebs is completely free to set up and maintain, except if you want your own domain name, and it costs me less than £10 per month to have a premium account. Totally worth it IMO.

I'm no expert, believe me! I just set about it one day and managed to pull it all together!!

Great interesting thread!!!

I havent got a website but would love one, I do have a group on facebook, where I regulary update the special offers etc.

How much does it cost to get someone to create a website for you?
I dont think I would be that good at doing it myself and would prefere a professional to do it.
I am aware from reading previous threads you can get some interference/ bad english (not sure what the correct term is) with some site makers eg mr site and I wouldnt want that.

How does it work regarding taking online bookings?
Does the client just email you their prefere time & day and you fit them in & email them back to confirm?

I guess that a simple solution would be to have the client email you with their preferred time and day, however what could be better is to have a proper web-based system where you would maintain a timetable of when you would be working in the salon, and then the client could choose their preferred day and time based on that, but would not be able to book at a time that another client already has booked.

That would mean that the client would be set up with a username and password to access a special clients-only part of the website, where they could do things like managing bookings etc.

If you use OneandOne (a direct domain provider and hosting service), you cut out the middle man fees and pay only £2.99 a year for .co.uk and £8.99 a year for .com. They seem pretty much the biggest in the SME market at least now, and have great website building, e-mail and hosting facilities too, for not much more.

Most of the the companies that come up if you google it are resellers and therefore you are also paying their commission!

I think every business should have a website. I've gotten alot of bookings from mine. Even if potential clients see my ad in the yellow pages they can then look up my website for more info. A few clients have even said they picked me out of the phone book because I had a website.

I hate it when businesses don't have one, I like to find out about their products/prices before going in to see them.

I wouldn't be without my website either. I've had mine for about 8 or 9 years now so have gained loads of business over the years because of it.

I sell a fair few gift vouchers online, especially at key times, plus have sold a few retail products - although I do need to add more to my current website.

I have a site but don't put it on here in case I want to moan for example in a blog, or have a query about a treatment and don't want to look unprofessional by asking other pro's questions. Love my site, I designed it myself and get lots of work from it. :)
