A friend of mine needs advice - she's wearing a red dress but doesn't know what colour Shellac nails to go for?

It depends on the red. I love oxblood and decadence for a deep red, wildfire for a bright one.
She can always go to cnd.com, find the shades of shellac and choose.

Would red nails not be too much?

I think personally, I would match jewelery and assessories rather than the dress. But that's me, as I just think it will be too much red for my taste. :)

Perhaps go with matching the colour jewellery she will be wearing? Gold or silver glitter, chrome or foils?

It would depend on the dress and the event. For a winter wedding I would probably go for something neutral like nude knickers with a touch of champagne glitter or field fox with ice vapor since the dress is already a bold colour. For a Christmas party I would be tempted to go all out with scarlet rockstar nails :)

It's for a Christmas dinner so I think nude and glitter will look good

Her accessories are nude.. so maybe gold?

Yeah it completely depends on your client and what they want. When I'm in this situation I usually create a few sample tips with a few different designs and colours. If I meet the client beforehand, I'll give them these so they can make their mind up before the appointment. :)
