Makes perfect sense to me ..... I'm exactly the same.

Me too.

Hmm we're not all Geminis are we?

It is a passion for me.
I should have started when I left school but I thought going to college and doing secretarial studies would give me a base and I guess I thought I would just follow that into business studies.
If I knew then what I know now I would have went into Beauty Therapy and continued with what I wanted to do.

Well now quite a bit later I finally got round to doing the courses to qualify me for nails. It worked out for the best with having kids and living army life it fits perfectly. I need new challenges all the time though that's why I try to fit a course into my holidays home and some of my courses are done here in Germany then I convert when I get back. It's a good way to see different companies techniques also.

I can honestly say I do this job more for the pleasure of making people's hands look beautiful (sometimes) and not for the money.

SIMPLE ......

I just want to make fake nails look real ....... I want to truly "enhance",
I want client to "love " their nails, I want them and others to think they are real.

This is, ..... and always will be my passion/reason/aim.

Somewhere along the line this seems to be lost for many, even in the competition arena.

Anything false/fake is supposed to look real.

I agree ... the most wonderful compliment ever is, "How do you keep your nails looking so good?" Because the person asking the question totally thinks they are real.

Carl, when you and I started in the world of nails, clients didn't want their friends to know they had their nails done ... we had to make them look real.

TODAY many seem to like nails that look more fake than real ... maybe this is because so few techs do nails that DO look natural and all they see in the mags are 'porn star' nails.

I had been having my nails done years...always liked nice nails but couldn't grow mine very well.

I have passion but I wouldn't do this if I wasn't getting paid...(if that makes sense) I think part of the passion is the fact that you are earning money doing what you love...for that I am grateful...How many people do we hear say "i hate my job"

I enjoy every set of nails I do...I get a high from clients feeling good about their nails...I love looking at pics of nails....I adore watching demos....Nails is in my heart but the money keeps it there.

If I was doing nails for free I don't think I would get the same feeling..its like being acknowledged that you have achieved something.

Done get me wrong...I don't JUST do nails for the money but have to be realistic and as much as I love nails it IS my income....I am just lucky to be earning doing what I love.

To answer the question...I think its my clients that give me passion...they are happy...keep coming back and that gives me the passion and drive to carry on...without clients i think the confidence and passion would be compromised.

Hope this comes across how i meant it too and not the oposite..
Exactly Ange,
I love the fact that we are making something out of nothing and also making what was once nasty looking beautiful.
I constantly strive to be the best in what I do and the fact that I am getting paid to do something I love is a bonus.
I have always been an arsty sort of person and I can really get my juices going when doing either a set of cb or pw just as much as doing my all out designs.
I am so glad that I took the steps to become a nail professional and that I have never looked back and found this site is the best thing I have ever done.
I get sooooo much inspiration from the friends that I have made here and it also keeps me grounded.
Geeg a brilliant thread.

I agree with you Carl and that's why I waited so long with entering the competition arena. I thought it wouldn't be worth entering because the nails there were too long, too fake etc... What I realised when I entered the competition arena was that I could easily bring what I needed in the comp. to the salon. Everything else but the fake-nails. The competitions have learned me better product and "time-control" and has made me an even better tech. As I said, it has also given me something new to strive for and to the last, it has given me the feeling of being part of something, a "community". It can be very lonely to be selfemployed but the comp. has given me "collegues" (???). And to the very last, it has given me more confidence. My passion for nails would never be the same without the confidence. Hmmm... again... this is difficult to explain in a different language, but I hope it made sense. :)

Well, What gives us our passion for nails?

Do you in fact feel a passion for nails or is it just a job, a means to an end?

Our love to be able to create something beautiful and personal.
And knowing that someone is sooo happy to get that and appreciate it.

A job? Worked in many very good, well paid jobs for many years. HATED THEM WITH A PASSION. :irked:

Just popping on to say...
I am still thinking of my reply to this one lol... have been for day's

I know once I get typing I will go on and on and on and on and on and oooonnnn, :green:
Think I'll leave this one until Tuesday when the kids are back in school,
A nice brew and a good ol' chat....no distractions  I want to answer this one fully to make ME think about my passion for nails.
(I'm dying to get started but I know I will get called away by a child...a boyfriend...a cat or a dog. )

I started my career as a legal secretary. I only got into nails by accident by going on a nail art course to stop me being bored. The rest is history, i now run my own nail bar and for such a small town i think im doing well. My clients love my passion for nails and i try as much new stuff as i can afford. I eat sleep and breathe nails. I love it. I give up so much for nails, i put my all into my profession and sometimes put it before family, friends and partner????

For nails I get a quick sense of gratification, simple perfection 10 times over in a short period of time. Something that not every one can do, a highly stylized, intensely creative project that doesn't take eons to finish. That's what gives me passion.

This is a fluid industry, constant changes, techniques, ideas. Nothing stays exactly the same... for me it's not just nails, I am a hair professional as well.

The transformation and confidence that can be given from a service we provide is priceless. (we put a tag on it, but in truth the feeling can't really be bought) Knowing that an hour or two in capable hands may give some one a "new lease" on life makes me passionate.

Watching a student's light bulb come on when I've demonstrated, they try it and it works. Seeing them try a new technique or connect techniques to try on their own, inspires me and makes me more passionate.

Knowing that I've influenced someone's day and made it better or influenced their life and made them stronger, that encourages me to stay committed and passionate about what I do.

Meeting new people and learning from them, trying new things, techniques, ideas.

I tried competitions- not something that was really my cup of tea- learned where my strengths and weaknesses were so I could improve, that inspired passion.

It's in my blood, I grew up on hairspray, manicures and bi annual perms...second generation, I'm inspired by Aunts, Cousins and my Mother. They have made me passionate.

There is nothing I would rather do....

In short, my passion comes from transformation and the ability to always create something the client loves....making a difference to the way they project themselfs, instead of hiding their nails, proudly presentig them and themselves to the world....Knowing that my skill, in their eyes is priceless......
How do I keep that passion alive, I don't know, its like breathing, I just do it automaticly.... by making it exiting for me, thinking outside the box and playing around to see what will or will not work.....
Nails is ME, thats what I am about xxxx
Nails for me are like my marriage to Richard, why do I love him with a passion???? He is just Richard and thats what does it for me, the same for nails, to some they are just Nails, but they do it for me............

I am very passionate about the industry. I wish I knew where it came from and why it took 20+ years for me to find it.
I have a few friends & family in hairdressing and while I was working as a receptionist I decided I had to do something new and was told by everyone "why dont you train to be a hairdresser you'd be so good" but I wanted to do something different. I found a nail tech course (which was rubbish) but it did 1 great thing for me, it was an introduction.
Everything since has been a whirlwind, new trends, styles, colours & techniques. I love it and this is where I want to make my mark in my small town.:)

Well i'm not working for the forseeable, and i'll probably have six moths off with the baby.however seeing the sculpting video by Nailzoo the other day inspired me to do my own,i'm quite pleased with them too :D

Seeing beautifull images of nails gives me my passion

Another great thread Geeg.

I have always had big knuckles and really long fingers and my nails have always been thin and weak, so enhancements really make my fingers look pretty. I started doing my own nails with OTC drug store products because I was always disappointed with job that was done by the professionals in my area.

I decided I would take the course so that I could do my own properly and maybe make an income from it.

My love affair blossomed from there. Its people like you, Geeg, who help keep my passion alive. Learning new things from the pros here and seeing new art lights my fire. I offer a service here that no one else does and when ladies see my nails - they want them. That makes me feel like a rockstar!

Giving the people what they want, having them leave happy, and being paid for it is such a kick! Especially when people recognize the nails I do on other people - they know it was done by me! Too cool! I am thinking that's gonna change here really soon though, as we are doing a training class to teach others l&p here and acrylic/gel advanced art. Good for the business, sad for me! I love being the only one in my local area that can do it - but distributor wise this class is the best decision I could have made!

Every job that I've had has always led me back to my creative side.
I've worked in the rag trade making garments for high street stores. Even when I was a nursery assistant I was always the one the manager asked to implement learning activities, design posters and displays and make stuff for the children.

I didn't realise until people kept mentioning about my creativeness.
So why not get paid to do something that I enjoy?

To me building a nail is like a piece of art in itself. A customer comes in with a blank canvass and you have the enjoyment to create something beautiful and they leave feeling happy, and you in return are happy because they are happy. And the bonus is that you get paid for that privilege. (sounds corny I know but that's exactly how I feel).
