I know I'm posting this twice, and I hope it's not taken offence to, but I really feel there's more to it than price. I've written a pretty thorough article on this topic exactly and highly recommend reading it and asking the colour company some of the questions listed. I've had two salons and over the years we changed colour quite a few times. It took a while, and some good and bad companies to understand what a good colour company really is.

Here's the link again: Choosing a colour company | Salon Software News

Again, I hope you don't mind the re-post but it's a big decision. Once you have a colour range it can feel hard to swap to another.

Well i see no use in that link at all, maybe in Australia it is useful but in the UK it is different, i was on Wella myself for a very long time and i felt really pee'd off as we only ever saw the rep about 2 x times a year, when he did come in he wanted large sums of money for his deals and we had nothing back from them, so we as a team started looking at others and we were impressed by the rep for Matrix in the Derby area, he was a local person so knew our area and our salon, he also listened to our needs as a business, tailor made an education plan for us, we had some in salon training which was great which we had never had before.
We also are offered FREE training at there academy in the area for courses like Reds, Blondes and grey coverage these are great courses for refreshing or if you have a little weakness on a certain area, and also infact to help us with Retail they have just invited us all for FREE to go a free retail training course on how to Retail and product knowleedge, With Wella we had nothing, now with Matrix we can buy a premium product, excellent posters , great training, and great prices, also our Rep has told us this year that Matrix have not increased there prices this year as they relaise the UK is going through a very difficult period so they DO help us salons out here, and we have free technical support at anytime, What more could you ask for ?

Deal wise with our Rep who comes in, they listen to your needs and give you what you want !!!
We have just had a dream age deal which is there ammonia free color, which we love loads for grey coverage, we got something like 20 colors altogether and got free new shade chart, 2 developers, posters, consultation packs and showcards for £110.00 bloody bargain, i do like Matrix as you can buy great deals or pop into the wholsaler and get WHAT YOU want, perfect i say .

Thankyou

Thanks for the feedback. I don't quite follow what you mean that the link shows no use and that it's different in Australia. Maybe I'm not reading it correctly but your whole post appears to me to be exactly what the article is about.

The article suggests finding out all of those things, you need to test them before you purchase and if they can't deliver find the one that does. It offers suggestions on how to test them, it's quite thorough.

I'm glad you found your colour company and it's a shame for the one that didn't support you, but if they didn't then they lose out, and so they should.

2 times a year visit from a rep is almost criminal! Our Goldwell rep would be there every two weeks like clockwork and any training at any time in salon was included free of charge. 2 times a year?! I wonder if that guy has his job still?!

Agree with salonswift. However if the focus of your salon is sets and blowdries, not colour, then price of colour is important.

We are a colour focussed salon, and we charge a lot for our work, so colour quality, pigment density and reliability are our main criteria. I buy so much tint every month that I get automatic deals anyway.

We use Majirel, inoa, Redken colour and shades EQ. They are more expensive to buy, but they ensure that we have and retain a large colour clientele.

The best support and backup that I have found comes with Redken, with huge ranges of courses, in salon technical training and sales training.

well my salon is a medium sized one and i have 8 staff, we go through a lot of color ourselves around 80 to 100 tubes a month, what is importnat to us is Education.

the reason for my entry on this forum was to answer the question of the lady, as i have one of my staff who is moving away about 40 miles as she has recently just married and is setting up her first salon with one other and i told the lady about the intro deal that was done for her to get her started.

Matrix in our area offer all salons greta help and when you have a great rep and a great wholesaler in the area it is a pure bonus, as i have met some awful ones in my experience, but now i get help all the time and that suits me fine.

thanks for the replies :).
the main focus in my salon will be on colouring but it will be a small salon and at first i will be doing it alone and if it takes off then i will employ another stylist. i have used matrix for a number of years but have never bought the colours in bulk as i used to buy as i needed. i want to go with a company that will offer support and training. i have heard a lot of good things about redken but i have never used them myself and feel that i need to stick with what i know. it isnt just price that im looking for, if it was then id be using ion colours that i can pick up for £4 for a 100ml tube.

i have emailed rendezvous to see if they would be able to offer me any deals and deliver to my area but i am quite a long way from them as i am in wigan.

thank you for all your help

hiya im used to wella and loreal and loved them but they can be pricey i hope im not alone here but ive used matrix and i didnt really like them that much i mean they r ok, erm i would say avoid lk (lisap) colours although u get 100mls they dont seem to take that well and covering grey is a bit of a weird system wiv this brand, have u tried nxt generation? they r cheap and u get 100ml but im not sure how good they r, if anyone could let me know cuz im considering trying them xxx thanks xx

At first my salon used nxt generation and in my experience they were not good at all. Did not cover grey well, colours looked flat and the condition of the hair after was not good at all.

But this is just my personal experience, yours many be different.
