my boss told me to use 9% with colours specifically for grey hair?!
but I find they cover better with 6

I stock a grey series that is meant to be used with 9%. I must admit, I only use 9% IF the grey is stubborn. If not I use 6% for grey and 3% if going through blonde.

10vol(3%) for black,20vol (6%) other permanent color to darken ,cover grey, and put color in,30 vol (9%) to lift ,40vol high lift.. thats how i was taught

That is it basically but you need to tweak and adjust to the product you are using. Products are becoming more and more sophisticated.

It always stands you in good stead to do the colour training linked to your product. Every brand has different rules regarding peroxide. I always use 3% with my red, regardless of depth, and always get a fantastic result.

I forgot to mention too, that it is mix ratios too. With a dual product (can be used as a quasi or permanent), it is the mix ratio that differentiates the two.
Semi, traditionally, are mixed 1:2 this will alter the molecule size of the product. You also have less colour molecules to peroxide molecules than you would with a permanent colour.

The only training I haven't been on is rusk but im in two minds if I should go on it.

I think it is always worth having a wide knowledge of as many products as possible. I don't tend to go on the full courses now, as the practical is very basic, but I do try and attend the theory ones. :)

In L'Oreal majirel, 3% is indeed used for darkening and superior grey coverage on very white hair. Majirel cannot be made into a semi or quasi no matter what peroxide is used. Donna is correct in saying it is the pigment molecules present in the colour that determine whether it washes out or not.

It may be entirely different with other ranges, I am only expert on 3 other ranges, but don't know so much about the cheaper end of the market. x

well i use tigi and wella. . and they work quite differently. . . tigi lifts alot more than wella so i tend to use 3% alot lol. . . and there tints are 1:1.5 ratio always unless for grey coverage or denser coverage where it is 1:1 and i always use 3% for grey coverage with tigi, but always use 6% for wella. . . jus shows every colour brand is different haha

How are you getting on with the Tigi? I just found it very uninspiring (the colour vibrancy), and the grey coverage was just too translucent for my clients. I thought, when using the range, that it would suit the younger end of the clientele.
