She sounds awful! I would just tell her to take it or leave it now, i think you have been more then fair considering she made you ill in the first place. I would suggest that to her, that she cash it and pass the money on to her, it is her you have dealt with and who you have taken money from so it should be her you continue to deal with, how she organises her finances is up to her!
Perhaps she is in debt from the wedding and if she puts it into her account if its over it would get swallowed up towards the cost of that. That would explain aswell why she's so determined to squeeze every penny she can out of you!

I have just read this thread and can also see both sides. I understand you are annoyed, but you really have written very unpleasant, unsubstanciated comments about this woman. As people have pointed out, she may just not have a bank account. You are jumping to an assumption that there is something fishy going on.

You also say that you are 95% certain she gave you swine flu. Yet you also stated that the client went out clubbing after her appointment. I had swine flu a few weeks ago and there is no way I would have been able to sit through a make up trial, never mind go out clubbing afterwards. You have said how ill you were with your swine flu. You do not know that this woman gave you swine flu. It is another assumption.

Yes brides-to-be are very stressed, always have been, always will be. How do you think she felt when you cancelled the day before her wedding? I bet her world came crashing down around her.

You cannot help being ill, however you can think about your customer service. Maybe you should not do bridal packages in the future if it causes you this amount of negative energy. It will be exhausting for you.

Also - I really need to know the answer to this - where on earth are they checking people's temperatures before they board an aircraft? Is this really true? If so, then I really am going for a lie down!

Sorry if I sound harsh, but it is meant in a constructive way.

So far so good right?
Wrong, I made a cheque out to her and sent it in the post and she is stating that she needs the cheque made out in her mothers name. Now this spells to me that something fishy is going on as the money is her money not her mothers. She was adament that she would not be cashing the cheque as she couldn't.

Whats everyones thoughts on this? Why do you think she is needing the cheque in her mums name and sent to her mums address? the money is definately for her and even if it was meant for her mum you could cash it and withdraw the money and give it to her
Hi, Firstly I think your doing the right thing refunding the £25:). But I do think it should have been refunded in cash as this is the way it was paid to you. The reason she wants the cheque written to her mum might be because her mother may have been the one paying for the treatments?

Oh my god, I really don't see what the problem is here at all. She paid you cash in advance for treatments you didn't do. Give her it back in cash. Either go round to her house or get her to come to your salon.

People get ill, things get cancelled but you need to sort this out asap and stop all the stress.

I always find it best to speak to people face to face and to have met up with her asap after you were better and she was back from honeymoon, would have sorted this out as quick as possible.

Sorry you got swine flu, must have been a nightmare!

I have organised with her a time for her to come in and collect the cash. I just found a bit bizzare that she couldn't cash the cheque.

I do sympathise with the bride as obviously i would have caused her immense stress on her wedding day and I have always had comments on my customer service (being positive not negative)

I always bite my tongue and have never ever lost my temper with a client or been disrespectful.

I stayed open additional hours for this client and answered phone calls at late at night to assist her and threw in freebies as a good will gesture which i am not charging her for.

It was very unfortunate I was diagnosed with swine flu and was unable to do the wedding which even after being diagnosed i still considered going

It is true they are checking peoples temperatures in airports to stop the spread of swine flu Swine flu, body heat, and airport scanners. - By William Saletan - Slate Magazine thats a post on it

At the risk of straying off topic, I'm not sure that's really happening. It's a very vague article concentrating on how ineffective these methods are. There is only one line in the article that nods to them actually being used, and it doesn't give any details. This article was also written in April when everyone was on a much higher alert.

I travel extensively with my job and have never come across anything like this. I even went through T5 in the first week or so of the panic and watched flights coming to and from Mexico with no problems or inconvenience to passengers. I have just returned from a few days in Texas, taking internal UK, long haul transatlantic and internal US flights - again no problems at all. The US immigration does take a while to get through yes, and the crew we went with did have quite a lot of explaining to do lol! but illness was never mentioned. I don't mind tough immigration though as a) I have nothing to hide and b) it's good to see tough security measures in place for everyone's well-being.

Anyway back to the topic:

It seems to me that this unfortunate situation is nearly over. The most important thing really is that the bride had her wonderful day with no hitches after all. It may be useful to reflect on this situation and think honestly about what you could do differently if such a similar situation arose in the future. We all learn from mistakes, be it our own or other peoples. It would be nice to see this disaster turn into a positive. I think you have given quite a lot of people food for thought with this one. We could probably all do with spending a few minutes today thinking about our contingency planning for swine flu or any other unforseen problem.

Thanks Joy, I think so as well. It's definately made me think about what I can do in future to avoid this happening. It would have been alot easier if i had someone working for me so I could have sent them to do the make ups. It is really difficult when your working on your own when things like this happen.

It was the client hereself that told me about the heat detection tests in airports when she was in for the 1st time having her tan done as she said she was nervous about getting through to go on her honey moon

Have you thought about linking up with other make up artists in your area? this way, shoud you get ill (god forbid) then there are least a few people to fall back on as a starting point AND of course they can always ask you should they need help. We have done this and have found it invaluable.

They are scanning people - certainly in some places. I went to Cuba in July, they were scanning people on arrival and pulling them out of the queue and detaining them if they were "warm". We also had to sign some sort of form about whether we'd been ill or not recently!

We went to Mexico in June and were temp checked when we arrived. You should team up with other make up artists/beauticians so that even in times when you are too busy, clients will appreciate you being able to give them a number of someone who make be able to fit them in, and they will do the same. :)

OMG NIk where in newcastle are you? i seriously think i ended up with the said bride.. lateness, no apology etc etc.. wedding same week.. flits between salons etc.. if it is i fullly sympathise.. PM me.. x all brides are stressed thou- i guess its the law.. x

I rang around a few make up artists i know but with it being a saturday and there being so many make ups to do they couldn't fit them in. Think i need a bit more back up, maybe alot of numbers to be able to ring to send someone out
