Hello, I am new to this site and think it is a fantastic forum and would value any advice given.

I am having a complete career change and hoping to become a nail technician. I have been on a 1 day foundation course and have since been getting lots of practice doing manicures for free on family and friends and I really am enjoying it.

I am a bit stuck on where to go from here. I would like to expand my service to more people i.e. friends of friends or work colleagues and send out flyers or business cards with my name and number but I only do manicures - how silly is that going to look? Do you think £10 is an adequate amount to charge for a 45 min manicure? Do I need insurance?

I intend on starting out slowly, offering manicures then hope to expand to enhancements, tanning, lashes but I am still working part-time and feel like I want to get experience with one thing at a time to ensure I am confident with the service I am providing.

I want to do a course in gellish or Shellac but cannot afford the initial layout of money seeing as I don't have a client base yet. Any recommendations for courses I should take?

Apologies for all the questions at once but I feel so confused!!!

Thanks in advance .........

I'm in Canada so the rules are a bit different but there's a lot of hoops to jump through to become an actual business. I know of one lady who runs an entire illegal spa out of the basement of her home. it gives me quite a laugh because she blatantly says on her website that she's not licenced.

So just becareful you're not doing anything illegal, business wise. I do agree that expanding your services would greatly benefit you. I'm not sure how much Shellac is over there but it's only cost me about $300 CAD to get set up for it. (i already had my lamp)

Have you thought about tinting? I took a half-day course and payed about $80 for a kit and it's a fantastic money-maker. Thuya products are fantastic. I also do eyelash perming.

Waxing can also have a lower-cost start up but you would need an esthetics table/bed, which i think they call a couch in the UK hahaha HTH!
