It's been forever since I've been around here... long story short, I was in beauty therapy training a while back but it's currently on hold because I had to move country. However, since I don't know much about hair styling, I need some professional advice.
I moved to Germany a few months ago and had luck in finding a nice hair salon to get my (and my partner's) hair done. I have a high maintenance short cut so this was a good thing. I've had two haircuts there so far and last week I booked a colour for this coming Saturday. My hair is all-over bleached blonde (using at-home kits) but I want the bleach to be refreshed at the salon, get it even lighter (I'm going towards very silvery ash/white blonde, and it's currently still a little yellowy-blonde for my liking) and have my dark roots done.
The thing is, the stylist didn't ask for a skin patch test or even mention one. I didn't even realise until after I'd booked. My last hair salon was really strict about patch tests so this seems a little strange. The stylist, who was cutting my partner's hair last week, also offered to mix up a bright red colour for him there and then since his red hair had faded at the back. My partner declined as he usually uses box dye at home, but I thought that was a little odd too, to be so spontaneous with colour application.
The salon is fairly new, perhaps a year old, and it's a very nice place but as I understand it there are only two stylists there currently (the owner and a lady who cut my hair last time), as such the place is always extremely quiet. It always unnerves me when I don't have evidence of a salon's good client base - my old place was very busy all the time - as it makes me worry about their credentials, but perhaps I'm just being paranoid on that count?
With regards to the patch test, any advice? I don't particularly want to cancel my appointment, and I'm a little nervous about accusing my stylist of neglecting to offer me a patch test! There is also a language barrier between English and German, to clarify... I speak English when I'm there because my German is not brilliant, and their English is pretty good but I get a little anxious about trying to discuss things!
Speaking to my partner about it, he says I have nothing to worry about and should just get the bleach done because I haven't had sensitivity to it before... but I know that's not necessarily how it works. Thoughts?
