Hi all, I did a new client on Thursday and she's just messaged me saying she won't need her removal appointment as 4 fingers have already chipped...she's on holiday too!!! Nightmare. Not had a complaint before so unsure how to deal?! Feel like I should offer her something but I'm not expecting her to return! I prepped and did it all as normal but used a new colour and had to apply quite a few coats as it didn't cover easily, could this be the reason? It was the gelish 'let down your hair' sunny yellow colour. My mum just got back from 2 weeks in Barbados and not a chip in bloody sight! I feel awful!!'

Thanks all X

I've had this a few times as I've just started and trying to find my feet and dealing with teething problems. In my aftercare card I have written in there that any chips or damage to the polish can be repaired but will be at a charge. As many other geeks on here have advised me, how can you be sure that she has been looking after her nails properly? If she's on holiday is it somewhere with a pool? When I used to have my nails done before being qualified mine peeled whilst on holiday. It was due to being in the pool all the time and so it softened the gel. If it was within a day or two I'd normally offer a repair for free but only at my own discretion. Because it's been 5 days, it's more likely due to be an issue from the care she's given her nails rather than something you've done so I wouldn't accept any fault or offer anything. Just because they've chipped she should still get them removed professionally otherwise she can't care that much if she's just going to peel them off or try to remove herself.

Yeah I've only been going a few months too and I didn't think I would be immune to complaints but it's still a blow when you get them eh!!! Thanks for the advice, think I need to update my aftercare leaflets!! Did you man yours yourself? X

Oh I did think it might be the chlorine. I was just thinking that as I hadn't used it before...hmmm x

I copied and pasted from some online examples and then changed some of it to suit me. Mine have my logo and contact info on the front and then the aftercare info on the back. Loads of writing but up to the client if they read and follow it.

I'm slowly learning how to spot the people that try to pull a fast one on me and the ones that genuinely will want to look after their nails. Trouble is it can be absolutely anything that has caused them to chip, she may have even had quite oily nail plates causing them to chip. Not sure if she's had them done by you before or not, but I've had to repair someone chips as it happened the day after I'd done them. She hadn't had anything on her nails for about a month or so and her previous nail tech said her plates were quite oily so I rubbed acetone on them, then did prep wipe then also added a powerbond to make sure they stick and I didn't hear anything after that.

5 days is still quite a while though after application, don't forget with gel polish it's "up to two weeks wear" so can be anything from 1 week to 2 depending on how they treat it.

I haven't done them before, she was a new client to me. She said she had shellac before but is new to the area and as she can't have gel for work hadn't had them for a while, so yes, could be that I guess. Hmm...feeling a bit deflated but I guess she was pissed off as on hol for 2 weeks and now got peeling nails!! Thanks for that, it's quite similar to mine actually, think I just need to jazz mine up a bit, they are pretty basic!! I just use home printer for mine at the mo, now got round to getting them properly printed yet!! Do you think that matters? I also need to invest in some cuticle oil pinkies to sell on I think X

I give out a printed home care leaflet (from vista print) and give them their first solar oil pinkie for free

It's more how they come across in the appointment to be honest. Quite a few let slip they don't look after their nails anyway. I.e they're biters or they do loads of washing up but hate gloves, or even that they look after animals so quite hands on. So far only had 1 trying to pull a fast one. She messaged me to say that her nail had chipped two days after I'd applied, so I asked for a pic, she sent one. I could see a crack next to the chip and have only seen that on mine when there's been pressure on the nail. Then she messaged an hour later with another picture saying it was getting worse and you could clearly see she'd just peeled and picked at the chip to get half the polish to come off. I've only seen small chips, never ones that take half the polish off the thumb nail. So that was pretty clear to me what she'd done. Then she messaged saying one was peeling. Again I asked for a picture. When I got it I could see that she's taken the free edge seal off, either from picking or biting as she'd told me that she had a habit of that when I was applying. I was firm and told her not to pick or bite them and that if she wanted them repaired I could do that and it would be £3 per nail. She then said she'd leave it. That was someone who had booked In when I wanted to practice on people so only priced to cover costs rather than full price but booked a month after I'd asked for people. (At the time I had no actual clients so thought may as well!)

With printing I just bought some craft white card from ASDA and made a template on word to print them double sided. I'll only get my business cards printed professionally as at the moment I don't have enough clients/income to warrant it.

I do need to get some cuticle oil to give/sell though! But not sure which sellers best to buy from?!

Bex, try Ellisons, louella belle, S2. They'll have solar oil & Dadi oil, plus they'll email the MSDS over to you.

I found Dadi better for the nail but Solar better for preventing hang nails. It's swings & roundabouts unless the client has a child/close relative with a particularly nasty allergy to nuts. Then it's Dadi oil all the way.

One of my old colleagues daughters couldn't even go in the supermarket at Christmas because the nuts were sold in nets. She carried an epipen.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely look at dadi oil as would match in with y Ibx treatments then too. Thank you so much! X

He does a lotion too, no SPF so it won't affect the colour coat.

I love IBX too.

Yeah I was thinking Dadi too as I use Ibx abd got the Dadi lotion too..smells lush!!
