In the midst of all the hullaballoo about the ethical parameters of cosmetic surgery, who should and shouldn't be getting it, who should and shouldn't be giving it and what products they should and shouldn't be putting in or on us, it's inspiring to see our industry friends down under taking time out to get professional views on some of these topics.

The Laser Lounge in Sydney hosted an event on the 20th August called "Wrinkles - Profession Confession". Attended by beauty editors, TV producers, and bloggers, the beauty boffins got together drank champagne ate nibbles and got down to it. The night focused on industry leading news regarding anti-wrinkle treatments and solutions and was lead by an expert panel: Bita Beyazaee (Co-founder and Head of Client Services at The Laser Lounge), Bahar Etminan (Editor and Founder of Rescu.com.au) and Dr. Bernard Bedholm (Cosmetic Surgeon at Cosmos Clinic).

Throughout the night the panel discussed issues such as anti-ageing skincare and ingredients, skin rejuvenation techniques and trends, the upsurge of male clients (yep, it's happening everywhere) with anti-ageing skin concerns and the fads, faux, highs and lows of cosmetic enhancements and surgery.

The conversation began by tackling the issues of trust. The panel discussed the research that consumers should undertake before considering cosmetic enhancements and the importance of the relationship between patient and practitioner. "It is important as a practitioner to really listen to your patients' concerns and make them aware of the full range of treatments and procedures that are available to them," says Dr. Bedholm. "Often when I meet with patients they tend to do a lot of the talking. It is vital to spend the time to educate your patient about the results and effects of the procedure they are considering especially is it's their first time."

The discussion progressed to industry standards and the need for consumers to be checking practitioner's qualifications and types of technologies that are used on their skin. For Laser and IPL technologies Bita Beyzaee says that consumers should be checking, "...where the machines were purchased from, who services them and opt for medical graded over salon graded lasers or IPL...as in general there are fewer chances of side effects and adverse reactions."

And it's not just the machinery that consumer's should be concerned about. Consumer's, even first-timers, need to have the confidence to check their therapist's credentials and qualifications and experience they've had working with the machine, "Afterall," says Beyzaee, "the machine is only as good as the operator."

The topic then moved onto when the right time to consider anti-wrinkle treatment is and, of course, the discussion about the ever-popular trend of 'preventative Botox' came out. While the discussion fell short of condemning or condoning the procedure, Bahar Etminan made reference to the twenty-somethings desiring treatments that 55 year olds are having. "The majority of 25 year old women have dabbled in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments...25 years olds are 3-4 years into having injectables, peels, micro-dermabrasion and other preventative and corrective skin treatments. As industry professionals we need to acknowledge this trend and use our experience and understanding to educate consumers about the treatments and procedures they are considering."

The final hot topic was the emerging male market and the rising trend in males seeking anti-ageing treatments specifically. "Times are definitely changing," acknowledged Ms. Beyzaee. "Before, men were very embarrassed about treating their skin concerns but recently I have noticed that they do like to look after themselves and maintain their self-image. Once they come in and see how comfortable, easy and effective treatments are, they always walk out the front door with the utmost confidence."

Dr. Beholm added, "...the frown lines seem to be of the most concern to our male patients. These concerns are being tackled at an earlier age using treatments such as dermal fillers and injectables."

Thanks must go to The Laser Lounge for organising the event, documenting it and sending it over to us here at Salon Geek. The discussion raised some interesting questions many of which have been discussed in previous posts and on other threads on the site but all of which are worth more than one discussion in a professional forum. The Laser Lounge often hosts events similar to this so watch this space for more information.

Until then...geek on!
