Hey. I recently found out my boss cant afford to sign me up for school apprentice). He won't put me on the books and is getting me to do hair as a stylist. We are friends.

Now I obviously need to complete my education. My boss wants me to go to school on my own terms and help there from Thursday to Saturday. However I am being thrown on clients without education (I had 1.6 years of my apprenticeahip which is year 2). I don't feel as though I would be able to have a good education as there is too much independence.

The other thing is (as we are friends) he is paying me lower (I get $15 and hour when I should get $25 and hour as a casual salon assistant).

Obviously it's an awkward situation as he is trying to get his new salon running. But my gut tells me I should look elsewhere.

However with spring carnival upon us and christmas coming up I feel it's a really nasty thing to do. Do you guys feel it would be possible to get a job as an apprentice after christmas or is now the time to go for it and how would you break it to a friend?

Friends seriously?
Friends do not take each other for mugs. He is simply using you and whilst you remain unqualified, he'll never have to pay you a proper wage.
Just leave!

Been there done that. He's taking advantage of the word "friend"
While i was training i worked stupidly long hours for next to nothing. As soon as i Qualified my boss dropped my hours by HALF.
Honey you need to leave because this will never change

Yesterday he said we need to discuss education... I am so confused

So we had a big discussion. I was clear on what I needed.

He is not signing me on as an apprentice as he cant afford the wage.

However what we are doing is I will spend 2 days a week at school (monday and tuesday), he will give me training as well on a mannequin and I will still work as a salon assistant (as long as something better doeant come along.

Better than nothing I suppose! At least he's compromising somewhere x

I'm so excited because this school looks really good.

Most the schools here are designed around meeting immigration standards (as we have a hairdressing shortage) or centerlink (welfare) so a lot of schools cut corners and pass people without teaching actually teaching them. I went in for a meeting, spoke to some people from there online and watched how their salon works. The staff seems to actually care about teaching. And they let you bring in extra activities that aren't in the course (such as advanced hair ups and colours).

I'm aiming for a 6 month finish (I have up to year 2 of my apprenticeship)
