One of the most popular new treatments to hit hair salons in the last few years, Brazilian Blowout, has found itself in the middle of some pretty serious legal labelling issues in California.

Kamala Harris, California's attorney general announced last week that the maker of a popular line of hair-straightening products has agreed to alert consumers that two of its formulations emit formaldehyde gas, a possible carcinogen.

A lawsuit, filed against Brazilian Blowout in November, brought the labelling issues to light and have forced the company to remove claims on their packaging that insisted the products were formaldehyde free - a chemical that can irritate the eyes, skin and lungs.

The company has also been made to pay penalties and fines totalling $600,000 for failing to notify hair stylists and their customers that it's products contain chemicals that may have serious health consequences. Going forward, Brazilian Blowout must now have all products tested for toxic substances in a state-approved lab and provide a pamphlet for salons outlining recommended safety procedures.

Are you using Brazilian Blowout in your salon? Does this raise issues about the responsibility of companies to say it how it is? Is it all a storm in a Californian tea-cup? Let us know...

Until then...geek on!
