Amid some scattered reports that the cosmetics and beauty industry boom may finally be slowing, there is good news for the nail industry: it just keeps on growing. Research undertaken by Mintel has revealed that, for the first time ever, nail polish sales have equalled that of lipstick sales.
Mintel confirm that in 2012, the nail polish market was worth a whopping £229 million with over 50% of British women taking an interest in their nail shade. The ever growing popularity of nail bars, salons and quick fix nail treatments have contributed to the boom. Even better, the research suggests that the sale of nail polishes will exceed that of lipstick in 2013. Forget the lipstick factor...it's all about nails these days.
Mintel also revealed that 26% of the total new launches in colour cosmetics category were nail polishes and a record number hit the retail shelves with figures increasing 400% from 2008.
Charlotte Libby, Household and Personal Care Analyst at Mintel, explains, "The fact that the nail colour cosmetics market has equalled that of the lip colour market for the first time highlights the growing popularity of nail polish. The growth in new product development of nail polish can be linked to self-expression and the desire to keep up to date with current trends.
Nail art continues to be a driving factor in sales. An explosion of new textures and effects is emerging which allows women in particular to easily personalise their nail look. Nail make-up is also relatively purse-friendly offering a range of affordable options and results that do no need daily application cementing its position as a go-to sector for all consumer budgets."
