Maybe I should leave a script with the salon owner so she can refer to it when clients are saying 2hours is too long ? x
I think this is the way to go.. I tell any potential new clients that i will need at least 2 hours of there time.. that i offer a full service and they will not be dissapointed! Talk it up.. make them feel as though coming to you will be a treat not a chore.. make the time they are with you as relaxed and friendly as possible and then look forward to rebookings!
Too many people want the enhancements but not the "hassle" of taking 2 hours out of their schedules to get them.. perhaps if we hold our service in warm regard and high esteem, they will too!! All my clients are - i consider- friends.. not ones i call up everyday or hit the pub for bevvies with.. but people i have come to know and like.. -even the ones i dont like think i do!!-
I like to think that every girl who leaves my care is happy and confident, and i know that if they feel that way then they will soon need me more then i need them!
stick with it mate!

I work in a salon self employed but they take appointments for me, at the moment it takes me between 1hr 45 and 2hrs to do a set and when clients are calling enquiring some are saying this is too long. I'm trying to get my time down but its hard as I dont even have clients everyday yet. The salon owner thinks I should switch to a system that is quicker so I can make more money (I pay 35% to them at the moment) some clients are getting there nails done in under 30mins. What should I do?

Thanks xx
hay hun ... most def just stick to wot u know n no matter how long it takes the clients will know that they r getting a treatment worth the time and effort.... bloody 30 min ... it can take that to do a good ol prep on some peeps ... GRRRRRRR... i take 1hr.30 to do a real good set of sclupts hunni ... dont feel like u need to cahnge anything if u dont feel u want too. xxxxx GOOD LUCK . XX emily

I had never had my nails enhanced when I'd done my initial UV gel / fibreglass training. I decided to go to one of these MMA places for L&P to see what they did. I booked 2 hours on the car park across the road, and I was back with them finished in 27 minutes, getting into my car! There was no sanitizing, the file was put straight back in the tub with all the others with no cleaning, etc! The nails actually looked nice though. Each nail was done with 1 ball that made the whole enhancement, I'd asked for p&w, they just used white tips.

NSS - Non Standard Salon - they are salons which may scrimp and save on things and may use sub standard products. If you put NSS in the search you will find other explanations.

RIGHTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!! I get ya now ... cant say i heard it called nss b4 ... lol ... comes from working from home for a while n not getting on ere and getting the low down on all the chat ...hahahahahaha cheers.. xx emily xx

Ummm.... whats a tip n' dip ? plastic tip with glue is it ? ... sorry never heard the like of this! :irked:

The bulk of my clients are former NSS- clients.

The first time set/appointment for any new client is 2hrs. After that, 1h15 to 1h45 depending on what needs to be done at rebalances, if there's art, etc..

At the first appointment, there is a lot of chat. I explain every single itty bitty detail of every step and product. Clearly pointing out the differences between myself and the NSS. And most importantly WHY my services don't damage the nails and why they take longer (example: nss prep = 2min with an efile, damaging the living daylights out of the natural nails and leaving cuts on the client. My prep takes about ummm 10-20? with cuticle eliminator and pusher and no bleeding cuts anywhere and NO PAIN)

I explain every product, how it works and why it works. Why it's necessary. I show all the available art products and choices etc.
I explain sanitation/hygiene practices etc.

In the beginning, I didn't explain it all. And clients simply said "my other tech didn't do that" and they didn't understand and were annoyed at the length of time. Recently, since I started explaining, I haven't lost any due to the time factor. They are more than pleased to have a technician that is conscientious about the HEALTH of THEIR nails and less concerned about time.

Perhaps if you put together a page with links for the web re: NSS and info about why the service is "detailed and personalized for each client" and what kind of "quality service" you offer, and that your "clients are not numbers on an assembly line"... perhaps this might help?

Best of luck

The problem I have with the term NSS is that if it was just salons using cheap products etc, then MOST salons would be NSS.

When this term first came out, it referred to salons that used drills and wore masks, implying that the fumes from their products were dangerous. That's what I call a NSS.

To say it refers to salons using cheap products is a little misleading. There are plenty of nail salons where the techs create fantastic nails, without damage to the client and no come backs with green nails etc............and their turn around time is 1hr. However, they use a mish mash of cheap tips, files and products in general. This happens where the salon owner isn't loyal to any one brand, usually for financial reasons. Walk along any high street and you won't see many that are say Creative or OPI; most of them are non branded.

So...........what is a NSS?

What I wrote was MAY use sub standard products, not DO use them:

To me a Non Standard Salon is a salon which does not have any standards:

Standards of cleanliness
Standards of training and education
Standards of professionalism

But they have no specific race, colour, or whatever.

However, I feel we have digressed from the original thread.

I've done nails for 8,5 years and I still use 1,5 - 2 hours for a new set and 1-1,5 hours for refill/reballance. I tell my customers I need this time to do nice nails, and none of them complain. If the manager complain she should raise your prices...

I wasn't referring to your comments.............just the term NSS.

to me NSS means crap lol

No seriously to me its inadiquate training, products, saftey etc.

If clients want quick cheap crappy nails they go there...
If clients want lovely natural looking nails with good products and after care, good customer service and client welfare they come to us.

Don't give up stand your ground!!! you know what the industry is about sarah educate them as they clearly don't have a clue? they wouldn't go to tesco's and buy cheap and quick hair colours for the sack of business would they, they wouldn't have any clients that is why they use good big brand names as it is better for business xx

thats an excellent idea, what you are offering is completely different from tip and dip and the person taking your appointments needs to be able to explain that to the client. also perhaps you could have an explanation printed out and put in the window that explains that your enhancements are, with regular maintenance, are permanent.
Good luck hun once word gets around you are going to be rushed of your feet.

I think a lot of clients dont actually know anything about nail extensions, so I guess their decision is limited to salons they walk past reguarly, salons their friends go to, prices etc...

I've recently had quite a few newbies in, who have gone "OOOOOH! They didnt do it like this at my old salon! They dipped my finger in. It was much quicker... But these look really nice and a lot stronger too..." Hopefully those new clients will now become regulars and not go back to "having their finger dipped in" x

I have actually lost clients to the local NSS, due to the length of time it takes me to do a set of L&P about 1 hour 30 minutes, if prep is easier about an hour and 20 minutes. Our local NSS charge 30 pounds for a set, they are far more expensive than the 17 pounds someone quoted. I also use tip and dip as party nails, for example I have a lady who owns and works in a chip shop, she doesn't like to wear enhancements to work, but if she is going out for a special evening and wants temporary enhancements, I use Backscratchers. I have just noticed on one of the supply sites IBD have just brought out their own tip and dip system. The tip and dip usually take me about 40 minutes, they look as good as L&P when applied correctly, but don't have the durability.
I have also snagged a few of the NSS customers this week, my mother-in-law went into town early on Saturady morning, she passed the NSS, which was late opening, there was a queue of about 12 people outside, she took the opportunity to hand out my business cards (which she always has in her bag). I had two walk in on Saturday and two others booked appointments by phone. They all seem really annoyed that the NSS are not good time keepers, and the two who walked in seemed really pleased with their nails and rebooked for infills. I am sending the mother-in-law down to the NSS every Saturday morning!
