Hello, just wondering about how other nail techs handle a situation with a client you suspect to have nail fungus? Especially with pedicures, it can be so awkward to decline service I understand that it's for the safety of all my other clients but I never want to make people feel bad or embarrassed. I've only had one person get very upset when I refused to do a pedicure. But that client wasn't about fungus the problem was she was a young diabetic and had open sores!! Anyway, id also like to know what you guys use for products to disinfect your pedicure tub. I'm the only nail tech at the salon so I don't have anyone to bounce ideas off of. Thanks in advance! Well I have noticed an increase in nail disorders as clients get older in my salon. I think it is due to the fact that most my older clients all do some kind of golf or sporting activity on a regular basis and use the communal bathrooms which is where initial fungus would be contracted.
Or with Muslim clients this is rife !! As husbands usually bring home nail fungus from the mosque due to being barefoot and communal washing of feet.

So a lot of clients are embarrest and already aware they have an issue.
I do them a basic pedicure , meaning soak scrub buff paint but as items I use are disposable there is no way they can contract or pass fungal along. Every client who I am slightly suspicious of gets to take home a home care fungal aid drops or oils and these help hugely.

I use a basic foot soak basin which does NOT have jets ( jets can become a health hazard due to bacterial sitting in the jet ways)
I have two basins so rotate them.
While I finish up my next client , I use a big dish washing scrubber brush and dishwashing liquid and bacterial soap and wash them out and scrub. Then I fill basin with water and add a cap and half of the miltons or sterilizing solution for 20min to 30min.
Before I rinse I re scrub and then rinse.

My foot files I use replacement pedicure grits per client.
My nail files and buffers and shiners are one per client , or they can bring their own lot of they choose.

My metal cuticle trimmer and the cuticle hoof stick etc are left in solution for 15min then placed into a medical grade autoclave for the required time. I have 5 sets of nail kits basically ready at any time.

I will NOT do gel or acrylic on any suspected fungus client , but I will paint their nails if they wish although I do not encourage this.
I do NOT allowed parrafin dip or such like treatment until they have doc note to say they are fungus free!

I also change the bedding towels after each client (pedicures done sitting up on the couch or bed) . Towels are all washed daily after use.

And these disposable are all costed into my treatments.

My clients are happy to pay extra and knowing they using clean items.
I know I am more expensive but I refuse to compromise on hygiene or my standards.

Too many salons try save money and skip basic steps and re use files etc, that is not necessary!

I do my usual consultation and if there's a contra indication I explain why I can't perform the service. It has happened and clients were disappointed however they are still regulars.
I have disposable liners to use.

Thanks for the reply! I would love to use liners in my tub but I have a J&A cleopatra unit and the good thing about it is that the jet is magnetic and no plumbing involved for that part so I can disinfect between clients. But the bad thing is I don't know if the liners would work with the magnet or if the liners would even fit. I do use disposable buffers and foot files but I would like to go all disposable for my peddys. No matter how hard I clean and disinfect it still makes me nervous !! I've seen a ton of clients with plantar warts and that makes me nervous too because apparently the HPV virus is hard to kill with disinfectant. I clean my tub by scrubbing with a low suds soap then rinse. Then a bleach and water mixture for 10 min (any longer and it eats away at the chrome in the tub!) then drain and rinse then I spray an EPA registered disinfectant let sit for 5 and wipe clean.

Lilyanna it sounds like you are certainly doing a good job in keeping your pedi station clean, I wouldn't worry.

I do however also have issues with warts and kind of avoid them, I won't risk my own self getting a wart due to clients. So will use glove for them and I won't buff etc net or over the wart as it will spread also increase risk to myself.

I think you should look into an autoclave for your metal implements. I do other treatments so my eyelash extension tools, brow scissors, tweezers all go in there. It saves you money in the long run. And it also basically the only sure way you know it has killed the bacterial etc. Mine heats upto 200 c like an over or more and it works on timers.
