Hey geeks.

I patch test a client yesterday for a hair colour tomorrow. She's a new mum .. Baby is 6 wks old.. She said it became itchy after applying it for 20mins. No lumps or bumps or redness. Haven't come across this before. If its usually a reaction there are more signs. She said everytime she colours her hair it always becomes itchy. Same thing happened on the patch test..

Should I colour it or no? Really don't know what todo. What's the norm for colouring new mums hair? I Usually advice 12 wks after the baby is born...

What should I do?!

hey, i'd leave it a few more weeks then patch test again or do some foils for her!:)

I did a client yesterday ( a new one) she said she usually has a tint and half head highlights she told me she got really itchy after having her tint last time, I then said I would rather skin test her than risk it however she said she wanted me to go ahead as although it was annoying it was bearable so I did it all ok, however poor client starting itching last night! I advised her to take some piriton and of it persists go to the gp, what other suggestions do u have, I will not be tinting her hair anymore! Foiled Highlights only lol

Be careful! In court this excuse wouldn't wash. Who says she won't take legal action against you now?? As a professional you know the conditions for applying that colour is to patch test! Sorry not being harsh but realistic! No one is your friend these days! People will sue for anything!!

Even with regular clients if they have a tint its a patch test everytime or the insurance becomes invalid! Because the manufacture has stated before each colour! Even if a client has been coming to you every 8 wks one time they could have a reaction and bang your history if they sue! No leg to stand on

I would listen to your own advice then and not colour it! If she has a reaction and sues you, what are you going to say? I did a patch test and she had a reaction but I still went ahead and done the colour?

I doubt that would hold up in court.

Im trying.tp figure out if it is a reaction or just really sensitive skin. She gets dry skin so I'm not sure if colour is irritating the skin rather than a reaction? Been doing hair for 7 yrs and haven't come across this.before!

I'd send her to her gp, he shouldbe able to tell the difference. X

I don't think your being harsh I apreciate Your advise I thought I I had a disclaimer it would be ok
I'm mobile so how would u suggest going about patch testing every client before they have a tint, my prices r already way under that of a salon?
X thanks

If you speak to your insurer a lot of them will tell you a disclaimer means nothing in court! As a professional your.not following the correct code of practice if you don't patch test..

I use colour start patch tests... Post them to clients.. They apply 48hrs before I check on the day and remove.. Fully insurance proof!

My sentiments exactly, I travel miles, it's just not feasible. Think we've had this before and the patches were suggested, then more recently Craig said he used them, some Geeks don't agree with them, but as far as I'm concerned it's better than nothing!

I have actually just had a client pop to me tonight for patch test, and I have started wrapping some product tightly in clingfilm and sending it to clients, no doubt I'll get slated by someone for doing that, as can't prove they do it, but if I client wanted they could still deny you went to their home or them to the salon for patch test, the ifs, buts and why's are boundless. At the end of the day lots of hairdressers claim they patch test, well I'm 40 yrs old so have been having my hair coloured a looonnnng time, been to various salons, all reputable and have NEVER had a patch test!

Thanks for the advise, where do u get them from? Do u think that they apply for all brands as I alternate between different brands etc
Thanks x

Same here even in college we were never patch tested when doing each other and at the Salon I worked in also!!

I do if a client has never had a tint but if they have for years etc I do it

Has made me a little worried now and has got me thinking!
Would be just my luck lol

Re posting: I was just saying about that to my partner , would the product be ok for that amount of time how do u send it? Mixed up? Does it not lose effectiveness once mixed for a certain amount of time? And like u say u can do all that and the client lie , how would u prove in court ?!?
Ggrrrr so much to do and risk for such little money!! X

Tint doesn't need to be mixed with peroxide for skin test so it's not oxidising, so that's fine, but it's air tight, I dab it on cotton wool then wrap it tightly in clingfilm, Brazilian same thing, and that just comes out of a litre bottle. It's not ideal, but I feel it's the next best thing, new clients have been impressed that I even bother, as it isn't possible as mobile to drive to clients home 48 hrs beforehand, it just isn't!! X

Patch test is used for a reason and if in doubt leave it out is what I'd say. Any signs, marks or rash round the skin test area is a big no no for any tint or colour.

Ok that's great help, what if the client was allergic to the peroxide rather than the tint itself? We were always taught to mix tint and peroxide and dab behind the ear, thus testing for both ?? Is that not the case? Xx
